Thirty-one Cassie The soft hum of the fan and the heat in the house lulled me into a semi-sleep state. I was caught between a chasm of nothingness and the real world. Since returning from the hospital, it was where I preferred to be. I didn’t have to think, to remember—all I had to do was breathe. I hadn’t moved from the lumpy, tattered sofa since Mike had set me there a couple of days ago. The hours passed and the afternoon temperatures of the Texas summer soared. Sweat glistened on my skin and droplets rolled from my neck down to my chest, making my clothes damp and sticky. I didn’t care. Somehow, I managed to drink some water and maybe even eat a little.
