Thirty-nine Cody I pulled the truck to a stop in the middle of a grassy field. Across the field was a brightly lit dance hall where the church social was being held. We sat for a moment, watching people going in and out of the building. The sound of crickets and country music filled the cool night air. I wasn’t much of a dancer. I’d only danced with Cassie twice: once on our first date and then again at prom. Dancing in the rain with her was my favorite. I wanted to hold her like that again. Her lips had curled into a gentle smile when she figured out where we were headed.
