Chapter 4

Ella “What on earth are you doing back here?” Paul’s voice rang out sharply the moment he saw me. His face twisted in anger as he turned to the guard beside me. “Didn’t I tell you to throw her out? Do you want to lose your job?” The guard stood there, breathing heavily, just like me. Neither of us spoke for a moment. I had run all the way here. The gate had opened to let a car out, and I slipped in before anyone could stop me. My chest rose and fell quickly, my whole body still shaking from fear. “Please…” I said, my voice weak but desperate. “I’m begging you. I don’t have anywhere to go. Something almost happened to me out there tonight.” My hands trembled as I spoke. “Just let me stay here for a little while. I will leave as soon as I find somewhere else.” The house was quiet now, most of the guests were gone. Only Paul and his family remained in the living room, watching me like I didn’t belong there. Before Paul could respond, Tonia walked toward us, her heels clicking loudly against the floor. Her expression was full of irritation. “No,” she said firmly. “She is not staying here. Not even for a minute.” She crossed her arms and looked at Paul. “If she stays, then I’m leaving. I refuse to share the same space with her.” Paul didn’t hesitate. “You heard her,” he said coldly. “You can’t stay here. I’m done with you, Ella. I don’t want to see your face again.” His eyes were filled with disgust. “Every time I look at you, I’m reminded of everything I had to endure.” His words hit me hard, but I didn’t move. “I will do anything,” I said quickly, dropping to my knees in front of him. “Anything at all, I can clean, cook, work as a maid. I don’t care, just let me stay. I have nowhere else to go.” Tears streamed down my face as I lowered my head, my pride completely gone. Paul shifted slightly, like he was thinking about it. Before he could speak, Stella’s voice came from behind him. “I hope you are not even considering letting her back in,” she said, stepping forward with a frown. “We don’t want her here. Or have you forgotten your mate’s feelings already?” I clenched my hands, my heart aching at her words. They were talking about feelings now, when they had never once cared about mine. I said nothing. I just cried harder, hoping that somehow, it would soften him. After a moment, Paul finally spoke. “She can stay,” he said slowly. “She will stay as a maid,” he continued, looking down at me. Then he turned to Tonia with a faint smile. “What could be more satisfying than watching someone who once acted important now work as a servant for free?” Before I could react, Stella suddenly stepped forward and kicked me hard. Pain shot through my side, and I gasped, almost losing my balance. “I’m going to make your life miserable while you’re here,” she said with a cold glare. “You’ll regret ever stepping foot back into this house.” I stayed on my knees, holding back a cry, my body aching and my heart even worse. “Ugh, this is so annoying,” Rex muttered from the side, clearly irritated. “Can we just poison her tonight or something? Or are you finally going to tell me your plan?” I ignored her. Stella looked down at me with a cruel smile, clearly pleased with herself. “If she’s going to stay here,” she began slowly, her voice filled with authority, “then she will live in the servants’ quarters. That is where she belongs now.” My heart sank even further, but she wasn’t done. “And she will dress like them too,” she added, her eyes scanning me with disgust. “No more of these decent clothes. You will wear the uniform of a maid so you never forget your place in this house.” A few quiet chuckles came from the others in the room, at least I was grateful for being accepted back into the house, mission one accomplished. The day I had been anticipating finally arrived. For over two weeks, I had endured nothing but pain, humiliation, and endless orders. Every single day felt like a punishment, yet I stayed knowing that I was finally going to make them pay for everything. “Can you try not to be completely useless today?” Paul’s mother, Sarah, snapped at me, her voice sharp and full of irritation. “Stand properly and direct the guests to their seats. I don’t want you ruining my daughter’s mating ceremony with that disgusting attitude of yours.” I lowered my head slightly, saying nothing. She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing at me. “And listen carefully, once the ceremony starts, disappear. I don’t want to see your face anywhere around here. Go straight to your room and stay there.” Before I could respond, Stella’s voice came from behind. “No, Mom,” she said, her tone calm but firm. “I want her to be there.” I looked up slightly as Stella walked toward us. Her face was covered in heavy makeup, perfectly done, and her dress hugged her body in a way that drew attention. It was bold, revealing, and undeniably beautiful. “I want her to watch me,” Stella continued, a small smile forming on her lips. “I want her to see me being mated to the most powerful Lycan in history.” Her words were filled with pride and mockery. Inside me, Rex stirred with irritation. She looks just as horrible as her attitude, she muttered, and I almost let a smile slip, but I held it back. Without saying anything, I turned and walked away. There was no point standing there any longer. Outside, I focused on my task. Guests kept arriving, one after another, dressed in expensive outfits, their voices filling the air with excitement. I guided them politely toward the mini hall prepared for the ceremony, keeping my head low. Some of them recognized me, and I could see it in their eyes— the confusion and surprise. After more than an hour, the hall was filled. The atmosphere began to shift, growing tense and expectant. A sudden wave of energy, everyone felt it. Stella’s mate had arrived, Murmurs spread quickly, excitement rising among the guests. I instinctively moved toward the entrance, ready to receive him and guide him inside, just as I had done for everyone else. “Don’t even think about it!” Stella’s voice cut through the air sharply, I froze. She was staring directly at me, her eyes filled with warning and disdain. “You’re going to ruin my day if you show your ugly face to my mate,” she said loudly. Laughter broke out among some of the guests, my chest tightened, and I felt the sting of tears building up, but I refused to let them fall in front of them. Without a word, I turned away and walked to a quiet corner, keeping my head down. Shame twisted painfully inside me. “First time I’m seeing a bride act this desperate,” Rex muttered. “Why is she going out to receive him herself instead of waiting like everyone else?” I let out a quiet scoff. “This is your first time attending something like this,” I replied. “You’d understand if you knew who she’s about to be mated to, Derek Zain.” The moment Derek stepped in, the entire hall went silent before soft gasps filled the air. Even Rex went quiet. Power rolled off him in waves, heavy and commanding. He stood taller than everyone around him, his body strong and perfectly built. His presence alone demanded attention. His face looked almost unreal, like it had been carefully carved, every feature sharp and striking. The eyepatch covering one eye didn’t take away from his appearance—it only made him more intimidating. I studied him closely and the rumors about him suddenly made sense. A man like that, it was no surprise people talked about how much of a womanizer he is. Even with Stella clinging tightly to his arm, smiling like she had won the world, he looked completely uninterested. His expression was distant, almost bored, like he didn’t want to be here at all. “Damn,” Rex breathed out in my head. “He’s insanely handsome. The b***h is ridiculously lucky.” She paused, then added dreamily, “Those arms, I wouldn’t mind being wrapped up in them.” I sighed and rubbed my forehead lightly. “How did I end up with a wolf like you?” “You are just boring,” she shot back. I ignored her and focused on the ceremony. I stayed in a quiet corner, keeping my presence as small as possible. The last thing I wanted was to draw attention. Still, my eyes kept drifting back to him. He looked like he wanted the whole thing to end quickly. There was no warmth in his gaze, no connection between him and Stella. It was strange. Weren’t mates supposed to look at each other like they were everything? Here, it was only one-sided. Stella couldn’t stop smiling, her eyes filled with excitement, while he remained unreadable. Soon, it was time for the vows, they both stood before the pack elder, who began the ceremony. Around them, the family watched with teary eyes, moved by the moment. I almost laughed under my breath, those tears would turn into real ones soon. “Rex,” I called quietly in my mind. She perked up immediately. “Hmm?” “I need you to break their mating bond,” I said calmly. “And connect me to him instead.” There was a brief pause, then Rex exploded with excitement. “Wait—right now?” she squealed. “You want me to snap their bond and tie that powerful Lycan to us instead?” She practically bounced with energy. “Forget what I said earlier—you are not boring at all. This is insane, and I love it.” A slow smile formed on my lips as I kept my gaze on the ceremony. “Do it.” Just as the elder was about to proceed, Derek suddenly raised his hand. “Stop!” He commanded. “I can’t feel the mate bond anymore.” He said. “That’s impossible.” The elder frowned. Murmurs spread across the room, the elder frowned and turned Stella. “What about you, Stella?” The confusion on her face meant she wasn’t feeling it either. “I….I.” She stuttered. “Does it matter if we don’t feel it, we are mates, it shouldn’t stop the ceremony.” She said, gasps filled the hall. Confusion spread like wildfire. People began whispering among themselves, trying to make sense of what was happening, something like that had never happened before. Inside me, Rex practically purred with excitement. Before anyone could react further, a deep, powerful growl ripped through the hall, It came from Derek. The entire room went still, he lifted his head slightly, his nose flaring as if he was catching a scent. “My mate…” he said slowly. “She’s here.” He began to look around, his sharp gaze scanning every corner of the hall then his eyes locked onto mine. He raised his hand and pointed directly at me. “She is the one.” A loud gasp broke out. Stella’s face was drained of all color. “That’s impossible!” she screamed, shaking her head wildly. “No, this is wrong, this ceremony has to continue!” But Derek didn’t even spare her a second glance, his eyes remained fixed on me, his expression cold and detached. “Are you ready to come on stage,” he said calmly, “or do you want to stand there and keep watching?” Without waiting for my response, he turned to the elder. “Continue the ceremony,” he said firmly. “With my new mate.” The elder hesitated, clearly unsure. He turned towards Stella, “I will cover the cost of today’s ceremony.”
