Chapter 2

1247 Words
Ella A month later, I was finally discharged from the hospital—alone and without my son. I lost him because I didn’t get medical attention in time when I went into labor. If not for the staff from the office who brought me in that day, I might not have survived either. Since then, no one had come to see me. I didn’t receive any calls from him or mine. Every night, I cried myself to sleep, blaming my weakness. If I had a wolf or if I were stronger maybe my baby would have lived. He was so beautiful, maybe if Paul had seen him, he would have accepted him. A cab eventually dropped me in front of my mansion. One of the doctors had arranged the ride, knowing I had nowhere else to turn. I stood in front of the house for some minutes, staring at it, how much I had missed home. I touched my stomach wishing I was here with my son. I pushed the door open and stepped into the living room and froze. The house was full. People filled every corner—some faces I recognized, most I didn’t. They were laughing, talking loudly, drinking, as if nothing in the world was wrong. I swallowed hard, my chest tightening. While I was fighting for my life in a hospital bed, they were celebrating here. “How lucky it is for them to have a double celebration in just a month.” one woman said, laughing softly. “One today, and another before the month ends. The Alpha is really blessed.” My brows furrowed, Paul’s father was the Alpha of this pack but this was my mansion. The house I built from nothing, from blood, sweat, and sacrifice. He had moved in after his house burned down. Paul had begged me to let him, his luna and his younger sister stay here too. I thought, stupidly, that maybe if I gave them my space, they would finally accept me. Instead, they only grew colder, only took more. My steps carried me forward before I even realized it. And then I saw Paul and Tonia, standing at the center of the room like royalty. She wore a simple wedding dress, and he held her close to him, behind them stood his parents and his sister, smiling proudly as if this were the happiest day of their lives. A photographer moved in to capture the moment, the second they saw me, the entire room went silent. My mother-in-law sneered the moment she saw me. “I thought this urchin was gone for good,” she said coldly. “Why is she back, showing that ugly face again?” My throat burned as tears threatened to spill, but I refused to let them fall. “So this is what I get for being kind to you all,” I said hoarsely. My voice shook anyway. “You betrayed me.” Paul stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “I thought you left to start a new life,” he said slowly. “Why are you here again?” My eyes widened in disbelief. “This is my house,” I said, my voice rising. “Why would I leave my house and my company to start over somewhere else?” Paul scoffed, as if I had said something ridiculous. “Have you forgotten you signed the house deed and the company over to me?” he said coldly. “I practically own everything now. And don’t you dare start with that ‘I built it with my sweat’ nonsense.” His lips curled. “I was the one who made that company what it is.” Stella let out a mocking laugh from the side. “I still don’t know how Paul tolerated you for years,” she said, her voice dripping with disgust. “But honestly, your ugly, wolf-less self should be grateful he even chose you for a minute. Now that he’s found his true mate, you should just disappear.” Her words didn’t shock me, she has always been ungrateful like her parents, after taking them in, I had sent her to the best university using my money and what I get in return is her always shaming me because I have no wolf. “Paul, you can’t do this to me,” I said, my voice unsteady as tears blurred my vision. “You can’t take my house, my company. I love you. I can change, I can be better. I will do anything for you.” My hand lifted weakly as I pointed at Tonia. “She has nothing to offer you.” Tonia’s lips curved in disdain, her eyes sharp as blades as she looked me over from head to toe, as though I was beneath her. Paul didn’t even hesitate. “I don’t want you anymore, Ella,” he said, his tone calm, almost bored. “I have found my mate. That alone should tell you everything.” His words struck deeper than any slap. Still, he continued, as if he was doing me a favor. “But I’m not completely heartless. I’m willing to offer you a way out, something that benefits both of us.” “This isn’t what we agreed on,” Tonia cut in, her voice low and tense, clearly displeased. Paul turned to her briefly, his expression softening just enough to reassure her. “Trust me,” he murmured. “I know how to handle this.” The gentleness he showed her twisted something inside me. He faced me again, and the warmth vanished instantly, replaced with cold calculation. “So,” he said, slipping his hands into his pockets, “you have two choices. Accept my terms and walk away peacefully, or refuse and make things difficult for yourself.” My fingers curled tightly around the wedding ring still on my hand. There was nothing left to fight for, he had already replaced me. “What are your terms?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. A slow, satisfied smile spread across his face. “You sign the divorce papers,” he said, “and I will give you three million dollars. Consider it compensation for your time as my wife.” My heart clenched painfully. “Or,” he added casually, “you refuse… and you leave with nothing. The company is already under my control, and without resources, you won’t last long enough to challenge me.” Three million for something I built from nothing. The company was worth more than twenty million and he was reducing my entire existence to a fraction of that. My throat tightened as I struggled to breathe, if I lost everything what would I become? And no one would ever choose me again, not with the mark on my face, not without a wolf. Maybe if I let go quietly, if I didn’t fight him, he might one day remember what I meant to him. Maybe he would regret this and he would come back. “Time is running out,” Paul said, his voice laced with impatience. “I don’t have all day.” The silence around us grew heavy as everyone watched, waiting for my answer. I lowered my gaze to the ring on my finger, my chest aching with a grief too deep for tears. I was still about to make a choice that could destroy me completely.
