CHAPTER 14 As the weeks passed, we began to adapt to our new lives and roles in New Berlin. We worked five days on and two days off, but work days could vary in length. If you were lucky, you worked twelve hours and had time to hit the Rec or the gym before grabbing eight hours of shut eye. If it was a bad day—due to manpower shortages, injuries, or sickness—you could easily work an eighteen-hour shift.
