Evan stood by the balcony of her room, eyes focused on the rising sun. Its light bathed the estate in gold, but none of it touched the darkness in her heart. They think I’m still the fool. Let them think so. Downstairs, the house buzzed with preparation. Her stepmother had called for a family meeting a discussion about Evan’s shares in the family company. Of course. That was always their goal. The moment she sat at the long mahogany table, she felt it Xavier was there. He looked the same—sharp suit, smooth hair, cold eyes. But Evan didn’t flinch. She met his gaze with a slight smile, just enough to confuse him. “Evan,” Stepmother began sweetly, “you know you’re still young. Managing shares and board meetings must be overwhelming. Why don’t you sign temporary control to Xavier, just for now?” Evan’s smile never faded. “So you can finally have the left over of my father’s legacy?” The room stilled. “I beg your pardon?” Stepmother said, blinking. “You heard me,” Evan said, crossing her legs. “I’m not giving up anything. In fact, I’ll be more involved from now on. Every meeting. Every decision. Every account.” Xavier’s eyes narrowed. Besides, she added, gaze settling on him, don’t you think it’s dangerous to trust someone who lies so easily? He stiffened. Tina clenched her fists. Evan stood and placed the document folder in her bag. “This is the last time you’ll try to play me. Next time, I’ll play you instead. As she walked away, she could feel their eyes boring into her back. Let them watch. The game had only begun.
