I asked for a divorce, but Colin refused.
He insisted that I had only hurt him because I wanted to betray him.
"Faye, I know you're just trying to make me angry.
"You're the only person who knows my secret. How could you betray me like this?
"I won't divorce you. We're going to be together for the rest of our lives."
His words struck me as absurd.
While he was betraying me again and again, he had never remembered that we were supposed to spend our lives together.
Now that something had happened to him, he suddenly remembered.
"Who would want to spend a lifetime with you?"
I laughed derisively.
"You were always a monster. Why should I keep understanding you?"
