Chapter 6: Unveiling the Bond

1322 Words
Ryder stirred awake, the soft glow of the crescent-shaped bruises on his chest catching his eye. They pulsed faintly, a warm, golden light that seemed to hum with an energy he couldn’t quite name. Beside him, Joshua lay still, his breathing deep and even, his dark hair spilling across the pillow. Ryder’s fingers itched to trace the marks, but he hesitated, a strange mix of curiosity and apprehension knotting his stomach. The bruises had always been a symbol of their bond, but now, they felt different—alive, almost. As he reached out, his fingertips brushing the glowing skin, a jolt shot through him. It wasn’t pain, exactly, but a rush of sensation that left him breathless. Suddenly, he wasn’t in their bed anymore. He was standing in a dimly lit room, the air thick with the scent of incense. Joshua was there, younger, his face tight with concentration as he chanted in a language Ryder didn’t recognize. The ritual. Ryder remembered it now, the moment their bond had been forged, but this time, he wasn’t just reliving it—he was feeling it. Joshua’s fear, his desperation to protect Ryder, his overwhelming love. Tears stung Ryder’s eyes as the memory washed over him, raw and unfiltered. When the vision faded, Ryder gasped, his hand still hovering over the bruises. Joshua’s eyes snapped open, his gaze sharp and alert. “Ryder? What’s wrong?” His voice was low, concerned, but Ryder couldn’t find the words to explain. Instead, he pulled Joshua closer, his fingers tangling in the other man’s hair. “Nothing,” he murmured, though his heart still raced. “Just… stay with me.” Joshua complied, his arms wrapping tightly around Ryder’s waist. For a moment, they lay in silence, the only sound their steady breathing. But then, Joshua’s hand drifted down Ryder’s side, his thumb brushing the glowing marks. Ryder tensed, knowing what would come next. Sure enough, the world shifted again. This time, he was in a different place—a small, cluttered apartment, the walls lined with books and strange artifacts. Joshua was there, but he was different. Younger, wilder, his eyes dark with a hunger Ryder recognized all too well. He was feeding, his fangs buried in the neck of a stranger, his hands gripping the other man’s hips with a possessiveness that made Ryder’s chest ache. The memory wasn’t just visual; it was sensory. Ryder could taste the coppery tang of blood, feel the thrill of power coursing through Joshua’s veins. He could feel Joshua’s desire, his need to dominate, to claim. When the vision ended, Ryder was shaking, his body slick with sweat. Joshua’s hands were on him, firm and reassuring, but Ryder couldn’t meet his eyes. “I’m sorry,” Joshua whispered, his voice thick with guilt. “I didn’t mean to—” “It’s okay,” Ryder cut in, though his voice trembled. “I just… I didn’t know.” He swallowed hard, forcing himself to look at Joshua. “I didn’t know it would be like this.” Joshua’s expression softened, his thumb brushing Ryder’s cheek. “It’s new for me too,” he admitted. “I didn’t realize the bruises would… react like this.” He paused, his gaze dropping to Ryder’s chest. “But maybe it’s not a bad thing. Maybe it’s just… another step.” Ryder nodded, though he wasn’t sure he believed it. Another step meant more vulnerability, more exposure. It meant laying bare every secret, every fear, every desire. But as Joshua leaned in, his lips brushing Ryder’s, he couldn’t resist. He kissed back, his hands clutching at Joshua’s shoulders, and for a moment, the world narrowed to just the two of them. But then, Joshua’s touch lingered on Ryder’s hip, and the world shifted again. This time, Ryder was in a different body altogether—his own, but younger, smaller. He was in a hospital room, the beeping of machines a constant backdrop. His mother sat by his bedside, her hand clasped in his, her voice trembling as she begged him to wake up. Ryder’s heart clenched as he felt the weight of her fear, her desperation. He hadn’t thought about that time in years, had buried it deep, but now, it was here, inescapable. When the vision faded, Ryder was crying, his body wracked with sobs. Joshua held him tightly, his whispers soothing, but Ryder couldn’t stop. “I didn’t want you to see that,” he choked out, his face buried in Joshua’s chest. “I didn’t want you to know.” “Ryder,” Joshua said, his voice firm but gentle. “It’s okay. You don’t have to hide from me.” He tilted Ryder’s chin up, forcing him to meet his gaze. “I’m not going anywhere. Not ever.” Ryder nodded, though he wasn’t sure he believed it. The bruises still glowed, a reminder that their bond was deeper than ever, more intimate than he’d ever imagined. And as Joshua’s lips found his again, Ryder couldn’t help but wonder what other secrets lay hidden, waiting to be uncovered. The thought terrified him, but it also thrilled him, a dangerous mix of fear and desire that left him breathless. As their kisses deepened, Ryder’s hands wandered, his fingers tracing the contours of Joshua’s body. But every touch was a risk now, a potential gateway to memories they might not be ready to face. And yet, Ryder couldn’t stop. He needed this—needed Joshua, needed the connection, even if it meant laying bare every part of himself. Joshua’s hands were just as restless, his touch sending sparks of memory through Ryder’s mind. A fleeting image of Joshua as a child, laughing as he chased a butterfly. A moment of panic as Joshua faced a rival vampire, his fangs bared in a snarl. Each memory was a piece of Joshua, a fragment of the man Ryder loved, and Ryder drank them in, hungry for more. But as Joshua’s lips trailed down Ryder’s neck, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin, Ryder hesitated. “Wait,” he whispered, his hands pressing gently against Joshua’s chest. “Not yet.” Joshua froze, his eyes searching Ryder’s face. “What is it?” Ryder shook his head, his heart pounding. “I just… I need a minute.” He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “This is a lot. More than I thought it would be.” Joshua nodded, his expression understanding. “Take your time,” he murmured, his hands resting lightly on Ryder’s hips. “I’m not going anywhere.” Ryder smiled, though it felt fragile, uncertain. “I know.” He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Joshua’s lips. “But maybe… maybe we should take it slow. Just for tonight.” Joshua’s eyes darkened, his gaze intense, but he nodded. “Whatever you need,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “You’re in control, Ryder. Always.” Ryder’s breath caught at the words, his heart swelling with a mix of relief and desire. He knew this was just the beginning, that their bond would continue to evolve, to challenge them in ways they couldn’t yet imagine. But for now, he was content to simply be here, in Joshua’s arms, the glow of the bruises a reminder of how deeply they were connected. As they lay entwined, the room quiet except for their steady breathing, Ryder felt a sense of peace settle over him. The memories, the vulnerabilities, the fears—they were all still there, waiting to be faced. But for now, he was safe. He was loved. And that was enough. The bruises continued to glow, a soft, golden light that seemed to pulse in time with their hearts. And as Ryder drifted off to sleep, Joshua’s arm draped protectively around him, he knew that whatever came next, they would face it together.
