Chapter 69

Chapter 69 Dungan’s POV “Do you ever sleep?” Gentry says as he walks into the room. I roll my shoulders as I break my focus on my training. I move everything to a safe place and turn around to Gentry. Ignoring his question because he knows I hate being interrupted. He stands with his arms crossed with a disappointed look. “What did I do now?” Gentry moans, “It wasn’t you. Well, I don’t think. Turmac has someone poking their nose into that village you’ve been protecting. The Prince was forced to go on a diplomatic mission out of the country. I think they are moving on the chance that he’s distracted to find more information out about it.” With a deep sigh and growl of frustration, “My mother must have found out and got her buddy in Turmac to start searching. I should have as much disinformation still out there. Don’t fret. You didn’t even know they existed until I told you, and you are the greatest spymaster in the world.” At the same moment, something clicked in my mind. An item placed in my reserve. I dipped down into my reserve and found a jewelry box. I grab it and pull it out into physical form in my hand. The box is a beautifully hand carved wood with an engraved wolf head wearing a crown. I lay my fingers down on the symbol. “What a beautiful mundane item. A crown with no gems?” Gentry chuckles amused. “Where did you get it?” The jewelry box has all the little nuisances of my Nadar’s work. During our time, she always wanted to know why I wilted away on some branch or twig. I taught her as much as I could because I could never keep my hands from moving when we were in one place for too long. I moved to open the latch and noticed a few spots needing some touchups. One piece of paper folded neatly in the middle of the box. I carefully placed the wooden jewelry box to the side and opened the letter. S, Lady Seltie is poking her nose into my business with you. I’m looking for proof to find she was in league with Cortan. She is using the oblivious Lana to gain information. I'm not sure of the motive. Ms. S is naive. -L I handed the letter to Gentry. He glances it over and then asks, “Who?” “Let me guess the mandatory diplomatic mission was to Redland.” I say with a laugh. “Ms. S is the princess.” “Ah. I’ll see what I can do.” Gentry says, asking to keep the letter. I nod at him and grab the box. I take it back into the library so I can tweak a few parts of the box before I return it to its maker. I contemplated for a long time while fiddling with the box. For the first time I’m not sure what I want to do. I know I’m grateful for Lucas to allow my Nadar to send me a message. I’m glad it worked. I’m at a loss for a good amount of time until I finally give up and pull out a hair pin I found, which I knew would look good on her. I don’t have time or energy to place an enchantment. I’m sure she would enjoy it just the same. I put them in the place of the letter. It’s probably best if I don’t send anything enchanted. Maybe then my mother would remove the cloak from her possession. She’s kept it hidden; I know because she never uses it anymore. I don’t even want to risk her with a message. I hope she understands the message with the pins.
