The Question

1150 Words
Lynn: As Peter and I sat door on the patio swing every memory I had suppressed over the years came back like a flood. I took a swing of my beer as I thought a lot has changed, there was no question about it. I tried to think of the best way not to make it awkward between us. When Sergio dropped me back off at my townhouse so I could get ready I thought my family would have invited Peter, and I made myself okay with it. They were his family as much as my own. I would be lying to myself if I were to admit that a tiny part of me was hoping he wouldn't be here, but boy was I wrong. "Do you remember the first time we sat here?" I asked while staring at my family enjoying themselves. "How could I forget?" he answered quietly. ***** Lynn: "Pebbles, let's go sit on the patio swing!" Peter said coming out of the house with a smile. "Don't call be pebbles!" I shouted. I've always hated that stupid nickname. But over the summer when my dad was visiting Celeste and I he had called me Pebbles in front of Peter and Joe. Ever since then Peter called me Pebbles. Joe tried but once I racked him he had stopped, Peter was the only one I allowed to call me that even though I begged him to stop. Instead of responding to my yelling Peter grabbed my hand and I felt the familiar tingles shoot up my arm whenever he touched me. He led us around my house towards the back yard where we kept the patio swing. As we sat down I looked around noticing no one was with us, for some reason my parents  didn't let me be alone with boys but with Peter they were okay with it.  After sitting down for a few minutes and no talking I began to feel an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Peter however was smiling and caressing my hands.  "What did you talk to my parents about? Are you all right?" I asked him rather panicky. "Yeah I'm good, I just wanted to ask them something for the longest time." He answered, not giving anything anyway. "What was so important you needed to ask?" I asked getting really impatient. He was quiet for a few moments, I was so nervous I forced myself to look at him. Finally he took a deep breath and looked at me. "I asked them and Celeste if it was okay that I date you." What? He wanted to date me? He came over here to ask permission! "And what did they say?" I asked nervously. Instead of asking me, Peter leaned in and gave me such a soft kiss on the lips I thought I would melt. All summer we flirted and there were times in the pools we came close to kissing but whenever we got close he held back. For a while there I thought he was not really interested. Breaking the kiss Peter leaned his forehead against mine, "Lynn... will you be my girlfriend?" he whispered. **** Peter: I asked the question I've been wanting to ask her since I first saw her and she said yes. That was 15 years ago when I asked her to be mine, and 8 years ago when I broke her heart and she left leaving me only half a man. All because I was too chicken to face her, and I did what I thought was the right thing at the time but now to this day I still regret it. "Lynn... I'm so sorry." I said, "I just couldn't face you after what happened." The response I got from her was not the one I thought I would have gotten "I know Peter, it's okay." She said calmly. Shooting my head up quickly I saw her already looking at me. She was smiling, but her eyes held so much emotions I didn't know what she was feeling. I needed to know what she was thinking, Lynn was the only person in the world who never gave anything away. Before I could even ask a voice interrupted us "Babe there you are I've been looking for you every where." Looking away from Lynn I saw Carrie standing right in front of us holding Alejandro in her arms looking down between Lynn and myself. Looking back at Lynn I noticed how close we were, I got up quickly and took a step towards my wife.  "Hey hun, yeah I've been outside just catching up," I replied "Lynn this is my wife... Carrie."  Daring myself and praying Lynn wouldn't remember Carrie I took a chance and looked at Lynn. At first she gave a polite "Hello" and for a second I thought I was safe but then her eyes widen in disbelief. Her eyes quickly snatched back at me and she could not hide the frown that began to form on her face. Standing up Lynn spoke "It's nice to finally meet Peter's wife, and who might I ask is this handsome devil?" "This is OUR son Alejandro." Carrie stated emphasizing the word our. Carrie knew all about Lynn, it was hard to keep things away from her when I kept insisting on being apart of her families lives. She was not happy about that and always use to demand that I no longer continue to see them, but that was a dead end. Lynn gave her a small smile, which was interesting. The Lynn I knew always use to bite back instead of being quiet. Things really have changed.... "I would hope so because that would be really awkward to explain since y'all are married." Lynn responded. Huh okay maybe not everything changed. "If you both would excuse me I see that my date has now arrived." Lynn said staring over our shoulders. Moving past us I followed her with my eyes heading over to a man with a dark complex and smiling brightly at her. Son of a b***h it was Sergio Lara. I knew that piece of s**t would try grab Lynn as soon as she was back. Who the hell invited him? This was supposed to be a family party. She stood on her tippy toes and wrapped her hand around his neck while he embraced her with a tight squeeze. I saw red, I felt nothing but rage boiling within me. "So that's the famous Lynn huh?" Carrie said next to me, "She is a lot more plain than I thought. The way her parents talked about her they made it seem like she was a goddess" The anger I felt towards Sergio just increased with Carrie saying Lynn was plain, but what could I say? She was my wife. "Lets head home already," I stated.
