I walk towards Alpha Bens' office, considering what I could be called in here for. I know I haven't done anything wrong, and it sounds like I got out of chores because of some teen doing something they shouldn't have.
I knock three times and then walk into his office. Luna Mary is sitting on the edge of his desk and they both look at me as I walk into the room. Something is off. I can immediately tell. Luna Mary looks like she wants to cry. I start running through things that may have happened to make her upset. Alpha Ben looks calm, so it can't be about Anna. They are holding hands, so it's not likely that something happened between the two of them, which leaves me. I swallow loudly, and my heart rate picks up.
"Kyra dear, come and sit", Alpha Ben gestures to a chair across from his desk. "We have some things that we wanted to talk about with you."
I look between the two of them still trying to figure out what is wrong, hoping the answer will become obvious before they blindside me with the news.
Alpha Ben clears his throat loudly and nods his head at the chair again, still waiting for me to sit. I slowly walk over to the chair and sit as gently as I can, already spooked about this situation. He sighs loudly, "Kyra, can you please just sit down so we can talk, nothing bad is happening, we honestly just want to talk." He shakes his head at me, clearly annoyed with my hesitation.
"Okay, if nothing is wrong, why does the Luna look like she wants to cry?" I squint my eyes at him suspiciously.
"Getting right to it, I have been talking to some of the other Alphas, and we are looking at changing some laws regarding The Academy." I have no idea what this has to do with me, but he continues. "We are considering allowing anyone in who will turn 20 within the year to make classes more uniform for everyone. The Academy itself is there to educate and train young wolves. The only reason that we ever waited to allow people in was because they find their mate at 20. We thought that it would be easier for the older wolves if they didn't have to hide their attraction from those they knew were their mates until the younger ones turned 20 and found out about the bond for themselves."
I think this though, it would suck if I found my mate, only not to be able to do anything about it, but would not telling them really be that bad when I got to see them every day until their birthday? I consider this change as if I actually have a say in the change in the law.
Alpha Ben picks up on my thought process. "And what are your thoughts on this proposed change, Kyra?"
"Umm..." I hesitate, not knowing what side of the vote he sits on currently. He clearly picks up on that as well.
"I want your opinion, not what you think that I want to hear," he tells me as he crosses his arms across his chest as to challenge me to lie to him.
I sigh and give him the best answer I can. "I can see both sides. I'm trying to put myself in that position of both being the older mate and the younger mate. If I found my mate and couldn't tell them, I think I would just try and be their friend. That way, we have an established relationship for when they find out. As a younger mate, I wouldn't really know anything was going on, so I guess I would be okay with it. The only problem I can see is if I knew who my mate was and someone else tried talking to them, trying to form a romantic relationship, I do not think that my wolf would handle that well. So, taking into account that there may be more fights at The Academy, I think overall it's not a bad idea to get everyone on the same training schedule if you have a plan to deal with the jealous wolves who can't say anything about their mates."
Alpha Ben smiles at me, "Brilliant, that's exactly what the consensus of the council was. We talked to the Alpha King this past weekend and decided that we were going to try it on a smaller scale, only letting in a few younger wolves before we offically change the law. This way, if it ends up being a bigger deal than we thought, we can work out how to handle the situation on a smaller scale. We have decided that 50 wolves under the age of 20 will be attending this fall when the semester starts in a few days." He looks up at me and I know what he's going to say before he even says it. They want me to be one of those 50. What could go wrong?
