Alice and I stare at each other, both too shocked to say anything. Before the young man takes his chance to elaborate further, the gorgeous guy walks to us. As soon as he stops in front of us, Alice lowers her head and lets out a whimper that only a kitten would make. The gorgeous man speaks to the young man in a firm voice, “Alex, why don’t you take Luna Alice back to Alpha Bryce, and I will take care of Elina.”
So “Alex” is the young man’s name. Alex bows his head to the gorgeous man and holds out his right arm, pointing it to the door.
“After you, Luna Alice.”
Alice shoots me one final desperate glance and walks out of the room with Alex. I want to stop them, but I’m too nervous to make any sound.
Now it’s just two of us in the enormous room. Oddly, the room temperature started rising as soon as those two left. My cheeks are burning with heat, so I start fanning my face with my hand. I steal a glance at the gorgeous man. Why doesn’t he say anything? If he is going to question me, he can start now. I quietly go through the fake testimony I have made up in my mind. I. Will. Never. Betray. Alice. I guess the determination must have shown on my face because the gorgeous man suddenly looks at me with interest. Finally getting my nerve up, I stare back at him. He frowns and lets out an audible sigh.
“It’s three o’clock in the morning. You must be very tired. I’ve put guards around the hotel. And I will be here to guard you when you sleep. So don’t worry, you are perfectly safe.”
Wh…What?! I frown. Why did he sound like he was not going to question me at all? And he will be staying with me in this room while I sleep? That’s so weird. There’s no way I can sleep with a stranger beside me. Not to mention I have a thousand questions listed in my mind, the first one being, “Who the hell are you?”
I glare at him in disbelief and feel ready to protest, but he speaks again.
“Oh, by the way,” he hesitates before he continues, “you may want to wash your face before you go to sleep.”
I blink but realize in seconds. Oh my god. The mascara stains… I have mascara stains all over my face! And my hair. I must look hilarious now. I flush with embarrassment, wishing the floor would open up and swallow me. Before I run to the bathroom, I turn to him.
“Listen, stranger. I have many questions to ask you. So be prepared to answer them when I come back.”
The gorgeous guy raises one brow, and before anything can come out of his mouth, I shut the door behind me in the bathroom. I riffle through my little handbag and try my best to make myself look fine. Not perfect, but at least fine. When I walk out of the bathroom, I see the gorgeous man sitting on the couch, his hand pinching the bridge of his nose with his eyes closed. I cough to make myself noticeable, “ahem.”
He opens his eyes and yawns. When he did that, he used a hand to cover his mouth. I frown. Well, I admit I might have had a crush on him when he saved me from the explosion, but now he’s acting more and more like a hypocrite. He is sitting in an upright, royal-mannered posture, which makes him… pompous.
“Elina. So what are your questions?”
Again, my heart leaps when he calls my name. I try to slow down the pace of my heartbeats as I walk to the couch. I clear my throat and say, “Okay, first, who are you?”
“I thought your friend told you about… us.”
“Well, she didn’t dive into the details. I just learned that you guys are… werewolves. And that’s pretty much of it.”
I gasped as soon as the last word came out of my mouth. s**t. What did I just say? I just turned Alice in! How could I be that stupid? I’m losing my mind just because the man speaking to me is a hot ass? I cover my mouth with my hand, feeling like the end of the world. I scream out uncontrollably, “I was lying! Please don’t believe a word I just said!”
The gorgeous man’s lips twitch with amusement, then, as if he can’t hold it anymore, he bursts out laughing. It’s not a big laugh, but I can’t help noticing the dimples around the corners of his mouth. Those dimples make him look even more handsome and… cute. My cheeks start burning, and I have to pinch myself to stop my stupid crush.
“It’s okay. Neither you nor your friend is in trouble.” He finally stops laughing. Then his following sentence literally makes me laugh. “To answer your question, my name is Kayden. I am the Lycan King, which means, the king of the werewolves’ world.”
I make a stifled noise somewhere between and snort and sniff when I try to resist laughing. Eventually, I pat him on the shoulder and say, “that’s a good one.”
But he doesn’t laugh. He just gives me a stern look, and that look gives me the creeps. Suddenly, my phone starts buzzing and dinging crazily, which makes me jump. He gets distracted by the phone too, and says, “oh. Your phone was dead, so I charged it. I think it just came alive.”
I murmur a “thanks” and grab my phone, seeing a bunch of texts from Alice.
ALICE: Just in case you don’t know, that man is our king!
ALICE: Don’t ever try to lie to him. He can definitely tell.
ALICE: Please tell him the truth! It’s better than lying to him, trust me.
ALICE: God, I wish you are not in trouble.
ALICE: Why are you not reading my message!!! *angry emoji*
ALICE: BTW why did Alex call you a queen? Are you really?
ALICE: No way! Elina, are you King Kayden’s mate?!
ALICE: REPLY ASAP!!!
I close my eyes desperately. What the f**k? So this gorgeous man in front of me is really the Lycan King? I shake my head and blurt out, “no way! Why would a king ever want to see me? I mean, I’m a… nobody.”
“I’m afraid you ARE somebody. You are my… queen.”
I know he has spoken his words in a super official manner, but my heart rate still elevates like hell for that last sentence. My head is spinning fast as I digest his words, “you mean we are… mates?”
“Right. So you know about the “mates” part.”
He seems relieved, but I can’t find a more uncomfortable, nervous, and scary situation in my life.
Luckily my brain is still working, so I explain, “you must have made a mistake. I can’t be your queen. I’m not even one of your species.”
“That’s right, you are human, but yes, we are mates. It never happened in history that a Lycan king’s mate is a human.”
“Then why?”
“It has something to do with my elder brother, but that’s another long story. If I tell it now, we will surely see the sun rising. Do you still want to hear it?”
I look at him straightly in the eyes. “Yes, I would love to.”
