He turned and left the room, but his words and faith gave me strength. As the warriors cleared the house tending to their orders, I gathered the house females, mostly omegas, who served as maids and cooks, and in my clearest, strongest voice began to give orders. "Iris and Delphi, begin preparing rooms for the women and children. They will need pillows, blankets, anything we can muster, and we may need to transform other spaces into sleeping quarters. Mila and Rae, get to the kitchens and begin preparations on dinner. Our warriors will be tired and hungry when they return and in need of sustenance. You all heard my father, we are under siege and this packhouse is our fortress. We must provide for the pack."
No one questioned my orders, but immediately went to work. We spent the next hours welcoming women and children of our pack who fled their homes to the packhouse at my father’s call. While not large by pack guidelines, our population had been steadily growing over the past few years, and now numbered almost one thousand. A solid structure, the packhouse was in many ways built like a fortress, with dorm-style rooms on the higher floors designed for housing the servants, unmated warriors, and families of the alpha, beta, and third in command. Regular warriors would leave the packhouse once they mated and raise their families in cabins sprinkled throughout our territory. The ground floor of the packhouse was open to all, and included large gathering spaces - the common room where my father gave his speeches, a dining room with rows of tables and chairs, and a large kitchen for meal preparation. There was also a gym for training, classrooms for the pups, and a huge covered porch which looked out over our territory, towards the east. Rarely used for anything other than storage, the basement bunker held supplies, excess food items, equipment, and any manner of other odds and ends. In preparation for an emergency, the basement had been fortified years ago as a place that the entire pack could seek shelter if the need arose.
