**Chapter Four**
The forest seemed darker as Claire followed Ethan along a narrow, overgrown path. Moonlight filtered through the canopy above, casting fragmented patterns on the ground. The crisp night air carried a faint scent of pine and damp earth, but it did little to ease her growing apprehension.
Ethan walked ahead, his posture rigid and his movements precise, as if every step carried the weight of purpose. He didn’t say much, only glancing back occasionally to ensure she was keeping up. Claire’s mind whirled with questions, but she held them back, waiting for him to break the silence.
Finally, he stopped near a small clearing and turned to face her. His sharp eyes caught the moonlight, glowing faintly in a way that sent a shiver down her spine.
“This is far enough,” he said, his voice low but steady. “We need to talk before things go any further.”
Claire crossed her arms, her skepticism surfacing despite the strangeness of the night. “Talk? Ethan, you just told me you’re some kind of… wolf. And now there’s another one after both of us. Do you really expect me to just accept all this?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “I don’t expect you to accept anything. But the danger is real, Claire, whether you believe me or not. Lucas is out there, and he won’t stop until he’s finished what he started.”
“And what exactly did he start?” Claire asked, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Why is he after you? And what does any of this have to do with me?”
Ethan hesitated, his gaze dropping briefly to the ground before meeting hers again. “Lucas and I… we were part of the same pack once. But he’s not the same man anymore. When our alpha died, Lucas wanted to take over. He was ruthless, willing to do anything for power. I challenged him, and when I won, he was exiled. He’s been hunting me ever since, blaming me for everything he lost.”
Claire’s brows furrowed. “That still doesn’t explain why he’s after me.”
Ethan stepped closer, his expression softening. “Because you helped me. When I showed up at your clinic, I was vulnerable. He sees you as a way to get to me. He’ll use anyone or anything to hurt me… and that makes you a target.”
The weight of his words settled heavily on her chest. She glanced around the clearing, the shadows between the trees suddenly feeling more ominous.
“So what do we do?” she asked quietly.
Ethan’s gaze didn’t waver. “We stay ahead of him. And when the time comes, we fight.”
Claire’s stomach churned at the thought. She was a doctor, not a fighter. The idea of being caught in a violent feud between two supernatural beings was beyond anything she’d ever imagined.
“I can’t just… leave my life behind,” she said. “My clinic, my patients… everything I’ve worked for. I can’t just walk away from it all because you brought your problems to my doorstep.”
Ethan’s expression hardened, but there was no anger in his voice when he spoke. “I’m not asking you to abandon your life, Claire. But I need you to understand how serious this is. Lucas won’t hesitate to hurt anyone who gets in his way. And right now, that includes you.”
Claire opened her mouth to argue, but a sudden sound cut through the night—a low, guttural growl that sent a chill racing down her spine. Ethan’s head snapped toward the trees, his body tensing like a coiled spring.
“Stay behind me,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Claire’s heart pounded as she stepped closer to him, her eyes darting toward the shadows. The growl came again, louder this time, and the underbrush rustled as something moved through it. Her mind screamed at her to run, but her feet felt rooted to the ground.
A figure emerged from the trees, its movements deliberate and predatory. It was a man, but there was something unmistakably animalistic about the way he carried himself. His eyes glowed an unnatural amber, and his lips curled into a menacing smile as he stepped into the clearing.
“Ethan,” the man said, his voice smooth but laced with venom. “I was wondering how long it would take you to show yourself.”
“Lucas,” Ethan replied, his tone cold. “You should have stayed gone.”
Lucas chuckled, the sound low and dangerous. “And miss the chance to settle the score? Not a chance.” His gaze shifted to Claire, and his smile widened. “And who’s this? Your little human friend?”
Ethan stepped in front of Claire, his stance protective. “Leave her out of this. Your fight is with me.”
“Oh, I intend to finish our fight,” Lucas said, his voice dropping to a growl. “But first, I think I’ll have a little fun.”
Before Claire could process what was happening, Lucas lunged, his form blurring as he moved. Ethan met him head-on, the two colliding with a force that shook the ground beneath them. The clearing erupted into chaos, the sounds of snarls and growls filling the air as the two men—or wolves—fought with a ferocity that left Claire frozen in place.
Her instincts screamed at her to run, but something deeper held her there. She couldn’t leave Ethan. Not like this.
And as she watched the battle unfold, a realization settled over her. She was no longer just an observer in this fight. She was part of it, whether she wanted to be or not.
