Chapter 11: The Beast Beneath the Mountain

1200 Words
The mountain shook again. Stone cracked beneath the fortress walls, spreading like lightning across the ground below. Elara gripped the cold edge of the battlement as the earth trembled violently beneath her feet. Dust rained down from the stone towers while the wolf warriors around her struggled to keep their balance. Below them, the soldiers of Valencrest staggered in confusion. “What is happening?” one of them shouted. But the answer came quickly. The ground exploded. A massive section of the mountain pass collapsed inward with a deafening roar, sending chunks of rock flying into the air. From the shattered earth, something enormous began to rise. At first, only a shadow. Then a massive claw burst from the ground, covered in dark scales that shimmered like black iron. The claw alone was larger than a warhorse. Gasps erupted along the fortress walls. “What… is that?” one of the wolf warriors whispered. The creature pulled itself higher, stone breaking away from its body as if the mountain itself had been its prison. A monstrous head emerged next. Eyes like burning embers opened slowly in the darkness. The beast roared. The sound was so powerful it rattled the fortress gates and echoed through the mountains like thunder. Even the Valencrest soldiers recoiled in fear. Aric Thorne, however, only smiled. “Elara,” he called up to the fortress wall, his voice carrying through the chaos. “Meet the guardian of the old world.” The creature continued rising, revealing a massive serpentine body covered in jagged scales. It was neither dragon nor serpent. Something far older. Something that had slept beneath the mountains for centuries. Kael’s eyes burned as he stared down at it. “Fall back!” he ordered the wolf warriors. “But my king” “That thing is not your enemy to face alone.” Below them, the creature swung its massive tail. The impact crushed several Valencrest soldiers instantly. The battlefield erupted into chaos. Men screamed. Horses panicked. The beast roared again, its massive jaws snapping through the air as it attacked anything that moved. Aric calmly mounted his horse again. “You see, Wolf King,” he shouted. “Some battles cannot be won with claws and teeth alone.” Kael’s patience snapped. His voice became a thunderous growl. “Open the gates!” The fortress warriors froze for only a moment before the command spread. “OPEN THE GATES!” Massive chains rattled as the enormous iron gates of the fortress began to lift. Elara turned to Kael. “You’re going out there?” His golden eyes flashed. “If that creature reaches the fortress walls, everyone inside dies.” Before she could respond, Kael stepped forward. And then His body began to change. Elara watched in stunned silence as the transformation began. Bones shifted beneath his skin. Muscles expanded. His eyes burned brighter. Dark fur erupted across his arms and shoulders. Within seconds, Kael was no longer entirely human. A towering werewolf stood before the battlements. Larger than any wolf Elara had ever seen. Powerful. Terrifying. Majestic. The wolf warriors around him slammed their fists to their chests. “For the king!” Kael leapt from the fortress wall. Elara gasped as his massive form landed far below with a heavy impact. The gates finished opening just as he hit the ground. Wolf warriors poured out behind him, shifting into their own wolf forms as they charged toward the battlefield. The beast roared again. Its burning eyes locked onto Kael. For a moment, the two monsters simply stared at each other. Then the creature lunged. Kael moved like lightning. He dodged the snapping jaws and slashed his claws across the beast’s scaled neck. Sparks flew as his claws scraped against the creature’s iron-like hide. The beast shrieked in fury. It swung its massive tail again. Kael barely avoided the crushing blow. Above on the fortress wall, Elara watched in horror. “They can’t kill it,” she whispered. The creature was too large. Too strong. Even the combined wolf warriors looked tiny beside it. Below them, Aric watched the battle with calm amusement. “You see now?” he murmured. “This world belongs to those who control power.” But something strange was happening. The creature suddenly paused. Its massive head slowly turned. Not toward Kael. Toward the fortress wall. Toward Elara. Its burning eyes locked onto her. Elara froze. A strange pressure filled the air. The creature stared at her as if it recognized her. Then it roared again. But this time The sound was different. Almost like a call. Elara felt something strange stir inside her chest. A sudden wave of heat rushed through her veins. Her vision blurred. She gripped the battlement as dizziness swept over her. “What… is happening to me?” Below, Kael noticed the creature’s sudden change in behavior. It was no longer attacking him. It was staring at the fortress. At Elara. Kael’s eyes widened slightly. The beast lowered its massive head. Then It began climbing the mountain. Straight toward the fortress. “Elara!” Lira shouted. The wolf warriors on the wall prepared their weapons. But the creature moved faster than expected. Its enormous claws dug into the stone cliffs as it climbed upward. Within seconds it had reached the lower walls. The fortress trembled violently. “Archers!” someone shouted. Arrows rained down. But they bounced harmlessly off the creature’s scales. Kael sprinted toward the base of the mountain, trying to intercept it. But the beast ignored him completely. It was only focused on one thing. Elara. The creature pulled itself higher. Its massive head rose level with the fortress wall. The wolf warriors backed away in terror. Elara stood frozen as the enormous creature stared directly at her. Its burning eyes softened slightly. As if it knew her. The heat inside Elara’s chest grew stronger. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Then the creature did something no one expected. It bowed its head. The entire battlefield fell silent. Even Kael froze below. The beast lowered itself before Elara like a servant kneeling before its master. Aric’s smile vanished instantly. “That’s… impossible.” Elara stared at the creature in disbelief. “What… are you?” The beast’s massive eyes glowed brighter. And then a deep voice echoed inside her mind. “You have returned.” Elara staggered back. “What?” The voice spoke again. Ancient. Powerful. “Daughter of the old blood… I have waited centuries for you.” Elara’s heart nearly stopped. Behind her, the wolf warriors stared in shock. Because the creature had not spoken aloud. But somehow— They had all heard it. Below, Kael’s golden eyes darkened with realization. “Elara…” he murmured. But before anyone could react Aric suddenly shouted. “Kill the girl!” The Valencrest soldiers raised strange black crossbows. And aimed directly at Elara. Kael’s roar shook the mountains. “Elara, MOVE!” But it was already too late. The soldiers fired. Dozens of black bolts shot toward the fortress wall Straight at Elara. The ancient creature recognizes Elara as its master... But Aric had already ordered her execution.
