Chapter 8: The Wolf King’s Domain

820 Words
Morning arrived slowly, creeping through the tall mountains that surrounded the hidden territory of the werewolves. For the first time since fleeing her destroyed kingdom, Elara woke somewhere that did not feel like immediate danger. But safety, she had learned, was often an illusion. She opened her eyes to the unfamiliar ceiling above her. The room was large but simple, built from dark stone and polished wood. Sunlight filtered through a narrow window, painting golden lines across the floor. For a moment, she could not remember how she had gotten here. Then the memories rushed back. The forest. The shadows. Kael. Elara sat up quickly, her heart pounding. She was no longer in the sanctuary clearing. Someone had brought her somewhere else during the night. Her hand instinctively moved to her waist, searching for a weapon she no longer had. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Before she could respond, the door opened. A tall young woman stepped inside. She wore dark leather armor and carried herself with the quiet confidence of someone used to authority. “You're awake,” the woman said calmly. Elara watched her carefully. “Where am I?” “You’re inside the mountain stronghold of the Wolf King.” The words made Elara freeze. “The… Wolf King?” she repeated. The woman raised an eyebrow slightly. “You truly didn’t know?” Elara remained silent. The woman crossed the room and placed a small tray of food on the table beside the bed. “You were brought here by King Kael himself,” she explained. “That alone has already caused enough rumors.” Elara frowned. “Rumors?” The woman smirked faintly. “Kings don’t usually carry unconscious human women through the gates of their fortress.” Before Elara could respond, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. The woman straightened immediately. The door opened again. Kael stepped inside. The entire atmosphere of the room changed the moment he entered. Even in human form, his presence filled the space like a storm barely contained. His dark hair was still slightly damp as if he had just returned from training, and his sharp golden eyes locked instantly onto Elara. The armored woman bowed her head. “My king.” “You may leave, Lira,” Kael said. Lira glanced once at Elara, curiosity flashing briefly across her face before she left the room. The door closed. Silence fell between them. Elara folded her arms defensively. “So,” she said. “You’re a king.” Kael leaned casually against the wall, studying her expression. “You seem disappointed.” “I seem confused,” Elara replied. “You never mentioned ruling an entire kingdom of wolves.” “You never mentioned being a runaway princess.” Her breath caught. For a moment neither of them spoke. Kael pushed himself off the wall and walked closer, his gaze sharp but not hostile. “You’re far from the lands that betrayed you,” he said. “No one here answers to the people hunting you.” “That doesn't mean they’ll protect me.” Kael stopped beside the window. “They will if I command it.” Elara studied him carefully. “You brought me here against my will.” “I saved your life.” “You decided my fate without asking.” Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. “Would you rather I had left you alone in the forest?” She had no answer for that. The silence stretched again. Then suddenly— A loud horn blast echoed through the mountain fortress. Kael’s head snapped toward the door. Another horn sounded. Then another. The alarm. Elara felt the tension immediately shift in the room. “What is that?” she asked. Kael was already moving. “Trouble.” He opened the door just as Lira appeared again, slightly out of breath. “My king,” she said urgently. “Scouts just returned.” Kael’s expression darkened. “Report.” Lira hesitated before speaking. “They weren’t alone.” Kael went completely still. “Who followed them?” Lira’s voice dropped. “Soldiers bearing the royal crest of Valencrest.” Elara’s heart nearly stopped. Valencrest. Her kingdom. The one that had betrayed her. Kael slowly turned his head toward her. His golden eyes burned with dangerous realization. “You said no one followed you.” Elara’s voice trembled slightly. “I thought no one did.” Outside, the fortress erupted into chaos. War horns echoed across the mountains. Lira spoke again, urgency rising. “They’re approaching the outer gate.” Kael’s gaze never left Elara. “Then it seems,” he said quietly, “your past has found you faster than expected.” Elara’s stomach twisted in dread. Because she knew exactly what the soldiers of Valencrest wanted. They weren’t coming for peace. They were coming to finish what they started. And now They had found her.
