CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Savannah sat on the hospital bed, staring at the white walls. She felt small in the large room. The smell of medicine filled the air. Her body was weak, but her mind was awake. She could not stop thinking about her life. About Nathaniel. About the baby.
Adrian walked in holding a small bag. “I brought you some food,” he said. “You need to eat.”
She blinked. “Why are you helping me? You don’t even know me.”
Adrian pulled the chair closer. “I don’t need to know you. I saw a woman fainting on the street. I couldn’t just walk away. And now I know you’re pregnant. That makes it even worse.”
Savannah lowered her eyes. Shame burned inside her. “I don’t deserve kindness.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Don’t say that. You deserve better than working until you faint.”
