**EFFIE CONTRARES**
I am the younger sister of Elijah Contreras, and my name is Effie. Growing up with Kayne, the powerful alpha of the North Pack, I always managed to get my way—except when it came to him. I’ve had a huge crush on Kayne for years but never told him. I did drop a few hints when we were together, but the only person who noticed was my brother. As Kayne’s beta and best friend, Elijah wasn’t thrilled about my crush. But I’m strong-headed and won’t take no for an answer, so controlling me has always been a challenge for him.
Over the years, my crush on Kayne grew into something deeper. But just when I finally decided to confess my feelings, Kayne met his mate and made her our pack’s Luna. I never liked Charlotte one bit. She had stolen Kayne away from me, and I always knew she would betray him.
When Kayne announced this morning that he and Charlotte were no longer together, relief struck me like a lightning bolt. This could be my chance to have him all to myself. But before I could relish the news, my heart filled with anger and jealousy because of the rumor about Kayne’s contract marriage with the female rogue they brought with them.
After we all dispersed from the training grounds, I suddenly had an idea: why not make their work easier and kill the b***h for them? If I can't have Kayne, then no one will.
*******
Standing in front of the rogue with one hand on my hip, I smirked at her. The cold water I had thrown on her had woken her up, and I felt satisfied with what I had done. I tossed the empty bucket to the side and narrowed my eyes at her.
“So you’re the one. Don’t they have better options?” I questioned with distaste, my eyes roaming over her appearance. “Why on earth would they pick such an ugly b***h to seduce Kayne into marriage? Like seriously, don’t you rogues have better clothes to wear or something? I mean, look at you! You’re disgustingly filthy and messy. But then again, it’s just the way you rogues are meant to be.”
The rogue glared back and started to breathe heavily. “Who are you?” she snapped.
“Me? I’m the one who’s going to kill you. But before that, I’m going to have a little fun with you first, to teach you a painful lesson! Oh, and please, those tricks won’t work on any men, especially when you look like that. So don’t even think you can seduce Kayne with your pathetic ways.”
The rogue just smirked, and I glared at her in surprise.
“Sweetie, seducing is not on my mind right now. It would be the last thing if I had to choose that option to get out of here. But you, on the other hand, something tells me that no one knows you’re down here threatening me about your alpha. What? Do you like him or something?”
My mouth set in a hard line, and I quickly glanced away. I’ve always been good at hiding my true feelings and wasn’t being obvious about it now. But how could this b***h see right through me?
“No! Are you insane? He’s more like a big brother to me.” I quickly covered my slip-up with a lie.
The rogue smiled and leaned back against the wall.
“Right, if that’s the case, then why are you down here threatening me not to seduce him? If you really think of him that way, then you wouldn’t mind him bringing me here.”
Her words annoyed me. It felt like I wasn’t in control of the situation anymore, but I was. I had thought she would be weak like the others we had captured and kept here, but I was mad at myself for being wrong. This rogue was different, and that infuriated me.
“I don’t mind, of course, but I do mind the fact that you’re still alive and breathing!”
I suddenly turned around and called outside. Three guards entered the room and stood behind me. I turned back to the rogue and shot her a smile while crossing my arms.
“Any last words?”
The rogue pushed herself off the wall and shrugged casually.
“None, actually.”
Her calmness started to bother me, and I scoffed out loud.
“Suit yourself.”
I turned around and walked out of the room, leaving the guys to take care of her instead. Before I could even take one step further, Kayne and Elijah suddenly appeared right in front of me.
