The queen’s mark

1145 Words
The city fell silent. Thousands of werewolves remained on one knee before the cathedral. Their voices had faded, but the words still echoed through the night. “Long live the Moon Queen.” Luna stood frozen. “This can’t be happening.” The silver crown pulsed against her head as if responding to every heartbeat. She looked at the High Alpha. “You’ve made a mistake.” The man smiled—not mockingly, but with quiet certainty. “I have waited eight hundred and sixteen years for this moment.” “You don’t even know me.” “I knew your soul long before I knew your face.” His answer only deepened her confusion. Kael stepped between them. “My King.” The High Alpha nodded. “Commander.” Luna blinked. “You know each other?” Kael gave a small nod. “I served him before I became your Guardian.” The Vampire Emperor folded his arms. “And before he became the High Alpha.” The tension between the two men was unmistakable. The High Alpha’s icy blue eyes shifted to the Emperor. “You still breathe.” “I could say the same.” For a moment, Luna thought they might attack each other. Instead, the High Alpha looked back at her. “My name is Alaric Fenrir.” The name rippled through the army. Every werewolf lowered their heads even farther. “I rule every wolf clan from the Carpathian Mountains to the Arctic Circle.” Luna stared. “You’re… the king?” He smiled faintly. “No.” “My people abandoned kings centuries ago.” “What are you then?” “The first Alpha.” “The last Alpha.” “And the only one every pack obeys.” Before Luna could ask another question, the cathedral floor shook violently. A deep rumble echoed beneath their feet. Seraphina’s expression turned to horror. “No…” Cracks raced across the marble floor. Silver light seeped through them like liquid moonlight. The Guardian inhaled sharply. “The Vault.” Luna frowned. “What vault?” Kael answered without taking his eyes off the floor. “The prison beneath this cathedral.” “The first prison.” “The one no one was ever meant to find.” The rumbling grew louder. Then… A scream rose from beneath the earth. Not human. Not animal. It sounded like thousands of voices crying out together. Every supernatural creature present flinched. Even the Harbinger, still perched on the broken roof, lowered its head. Almost… As if listening. Then it spoke. “My master awakens.” Blue fire erupted from its wings. The creature launched itself into the sky. “No!” Alaric shouted. He leaped after it, shifting in midair into a colossal silver wolf. Kael transformed beside him. The two wolves raced across the rooftops after the fleeing monster. The Vampire Emperor watched them disappear. “They’re too late.” Luna looked at him. “What does that mean?” He turned toward the cracked floor. “It means…” “…the Harbinger was never here to kill you.” Luna’s stomach tightened. “He was distracting us.” The realization hit everyone at once. The Harbinger hadn’t come for the Moon Queen. It had come for what lay beneath her feet. A deafening explosion shattered the cathedral floor. Marble flew in every direction. A massive pit opened in the center of the sanctuary. From the darkness below… A staircase emerged. Not built. It rose by itself, each black stone step forming from swirling shadows. Cold air poured from the abyss. Luna wrapped her arms around herself. It felt like standing before the entrance to winter itself. At the bottom of the staircase… Two silver eyes slowly opened. The Emperor whispered a curse in a language older than Latin. Seraphina stepped in front of Luna. “You must leave.” “I’m not leaving.” “You don’t understand.” “No,” Luna snapped. “Nobody has explained anything!” The dead queen closed her eyes. Then she spoke words that silenced everyone. “When I imprisoned the Shadow King…” “…I wasn’t alone.” Luna frowned. “What do you mean?” “There were two of us.” The Emperor stared at her. “You never told anyone.” “I couldn’t.” “Who helped you?” Luna asked. Seraphina’s black eyes filled with tears. “My brother.” Silence. “He wasn’t consumed by darkness.” “He chose it.” “He volunteered to become the prison.” Luna’s breath caught. “What?” “The Shadow King could not be sealed inside stone.” “So…” “…we sealed him inside a living soul.” The Emperor looked away. “Seraphina’s brother became the cage.” “And she locked both of them beneath this cathedral.” The ground shook again. A voice echoed from the darkness. Calm. Ancient. Beautiful. “Seraphina…” The dead queen trembled. “I know that voice.” “So do I,” the Emperor whispered. The voice came again. “You’ve kept me waiting…” A hand appeared from the shadows below. It looked perfectly human. Pale. Elegant. Strong. Then another. A tall man slowly climbed the staircase. He wore black armor covered in silver chains. His dark hair reached his shoulders. His face… Was impossibly beautiful. He looked no older than thirty. But his silver eyes held an eternity of sorrow. When he reached the top step… He looked directly at Seraphina. A single tear rolled down his face. “Little sister.” Seraphina collapsed to her knees. “Caelan…” The man smiled sadly. “I missed you.” Luna looked around in confusion. “He doesn’t look evil.” “No,” the Emperor replied quietly. “That’s what frightens me.” Caelan’s gaze shifted to Luna. The moment their eyes met… The Moon Crown flared with brilliant silver light. He smiled. “So…” “The last Queen has finally come.” Luna took an instinctive step backward. “Who are you?” His answer was gentle. “I was once called the Prince of the Moon.” He paused. “Now…” “…the world remembers me by another name.” The silver chains wrapped around his body began to crack. One by one. They shattered. A wave of darkness swept through the cathedral, extinguishing every remaining candle. The temperature dropped below freezing. Every vampire, every werewolf, and every witch in the city felt it. The Emperor slowly drew his sword. Kael and Alaric, sensing the surge of power from miles away, stopped chasing the Harbinger and turned back toward the cathedral. Because they all knew what those broken chains meant. The prison had failed. And the true war had finally begun.
