The harbinger

1180 Words
The creature laughed. It was not a roar. Not a screech. It laughed like a man who had already won. The sound rolled across Prague, shattering the cathedral’s remaining stained-glass windows. Thousands of glittering fragments rained into the streets below. People screamed. Car alarms erupted. Every bird within miles took flight at once. Inside the ruined sanctuary, no one moved. The Harbinger spread its enormous black wings. Moonlight disappeared beneath them. Its body was unlike any creature Luna had ever imagined. Towering over the cathedral roof, it was covered in scales as dark as obsidian, yet veins of blue fire pulsed beneath them. Curved horns swept back from its skull, and its eyes glowed with an icy intelligence. It wasn’t merely a beast. It was watching her. Studying her. Waiting. Bring me the Crown… The voice echoed directly inside Luna’s mind. Her knees weakened. The silver crown tightened around her temples. A sharp pain exploded behind her eyes. Another vision seized her. ⸻ A battlefield stretched beneath two blood-red moons. Thousands of vampires charged beside werewolves. Witches stood behind them, raising walls of silver fire. At the center of it all… A woman wearing the Moon Crown. She stood alone before a figure cloaked entirely in darkness. His face could not be seen. Only his eyes. Two burning silver eyes. “You cannot defeat me,” the shadow said. The queen answered calmly. “I don’t have to.” She raised both hands. The sky shattered. Chains of moonlight wrapped around the dark king. He screamed. Not in pain. In rage. “You will imprison me…” His voice shook the heavens. “…but one day…” “…your final heir will set me free.” The vision broke. ⸻ Luna gasped. She nearly collapsed again. Kael caught her arm before she fell. “What did you see?” She looked at him with frightened eyes. “I’ve seen him before.” Seraphina’s face became pale. “No…” “He said…” Luna swallowed. “He said I would free him.” Silence. No one spoke. The Vampire Emperor’s jaw tightened. “Then the prophecy is unfolding exactly as written.” “What prophecy?” Luna demanded. The Emperor looked at her with genuine sadness. “The Last Moon Queen does not save the world.” He hesitated. “She ends it.” A deafening roar interrupted him. The Harbinger slammed one massive claw through the cathedral roof. Stone exploded everywhere. The claw reached toward Luna. “DOWN!” Kael threw himself at her. The two crashed across the marble floor just as the claws tore through the place where she had been standing. The impact shook the entire cathedral. Dust filled the air. The Guardian transformed completely into his enormous wolf form. With a furious howl, he leaped through the opening in the roof. His black body collided with the Harbinger. The force sent both crashing across the ancient stone. Outside, people fled as two monstrous creatures battled atop one of Prague’s oldest cathedrals. The Vampire Emperor sighed. “He never did know when to retreat.” He removed his black coat. Underneath, silver armor gleamed beneath the moonlight. Luna stared. “You came dressed for war.” “I’ve been dressed for war for nine hundred years.” His crimson eyes lifted toward the roof. “And unfortunately…” “…war has finally found us again.” He vanished. One heartbeat later, he appeared atop the cathedral. Luna rushed toward the opening. She looked outside. The battle was unbelievable. The Guardian tore into the Harbinger with claws capable of slicing stone. The monster answered with blasts of blue fire that melted statues and cracked towers. Then the Vampire Emperor joined the fight. He moved faster than lightning. One moment he stood beside the Guardian. The next, his sword carved a glowing crimson line across the Harbinger’s neck. Black blood rained over the cathedral. The creature roared. “You insects!” Its voice shook the city. “You cannot stop what has begun!” Blue flames erupted from its mouth. The Guardian shielded the Emperor, taking the blast full force. He crashed through the cathedral roof. Luna screamed. “No!” She ran toward him. The Guardian lay buried beneath broken stone. His skin was covered in burns. His breathing had become shallow. Golden eyes struggled to stay open. Luna dropped beside him. “Please…” She didn’t know why she said it. Or how. She simply reached for his hand. The moment their skin touched… The Moon Crown ignited. Silver light burst from Luna’s body. The broken cathedral disappeared beneath a wave of brilliant moonlight. The Guardian’s wounds began healing before her eyes. Burned flesh knitted together. Broken bones straightened. His breathing steadied. Everyone froze. Even the Harbinger stopped fighting. The creature looked down at Luna with growing excitement. “It is true…” It sounded almost delighted. “The Queen has awakened her blessing.” Kael looked at Luna in astonishment. “You healed him…” “I didn’t do anything.” “You used Moon Magic.” Luna shook her head. “I don’t even know what that is.” The Guardian slowly opened his eyes. He stared at Luna’s hand still holding his. His expression softened. “You always healed me.” Before Luna could ask what he meant… A new sound echoed through the night. Howling. Hundreds of wolves. No… Thousands. The cries came from every direction. From forests… From mountains… From places no ordinary wolf could possibly reach. Kael looked toward the eastern horizon. “They’ve answered.” “Their Alpha has arrived.” The Guardian slowly stood. His golden eyes widened. “No…” A deep horn sounded across the city. Once. Twice. Three times. Then, from the darkness beyond Prague Castle, an army emerged. Hundreds of werewolves. They marched through the streets in perfect formation, wearing black armor marked with silver moons. Citizens scattered in terror as the supernatural army surrounded the cathedral. At their head rode a lone warrior atop a massive white wolf. He wore a crown of black iron. His silver cloak billowed behind him. When he removed his helmet, long dark hair fell over piercing blue eyes that seemed almost luminous beneath the moon. He looked no older than thirty. Yet every werewolf bowed as he passed. Kael’s face hardened. The Guardian lowered his head in respect. Even the Vampire Emperor frowned. “The High Alpha…” The rider dismounted. His boots touched the ground with quiet authority. His gaze lifted to Luna. He studied her for a long moment. Then, unexpectedly… He smiled. “After nine centuries…” He placed a fist over his heart and bowed deeply. “Welcome home, Your Majesty.” Behind him, every werewolf in the army dropped to one knee. The earth trembled beneath thousands of voices speaking in perfect unison. “Long live the Moon Queen.” Far beneath the cathedral… Deep below the foundations where no map had ever reached… Something ancient opened its silver eyes. And smiled.
