A new beginning

It had been a week since Sharon discussed her plans with her parents, a week of deliberating where she might work, searching for jobs, and planning to rent a modest place close to her potential workplace. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow through her bedroom window as Sharon sat on her bed, lost in thought. The buzzing of her phone jolted her out of her reverie. Picking it up, she saw Gift's name flashing on the screen. "Hi, babe," Gift's cheerful voice greeted her. "Hi, boo. How are you?" Sharon responded, a smile forming on her face. "I'm alright. So, I called to tell you something," Gift said, her voice laced with excitement. "What's that?" Sharon asked, her curiosity piqued. "I was driving back from Bayo's office today, and as I passed the secretariat, I noticed a restaurant with a 'Waitress Needed' sign. Naturally, I thought of you," Gift explained, her tone full of enthusiasm. "Wow, that's great news!" Sharon exclaimed. "I'll check it out tomorrow. Can you send me the address?" "I thought you'd say that," Gift replied with a chuckle. "I'll send it right away." "Thanks, babe! Bye." After ending the call, Sharon felt a surge of excitement. This could be her first real opportunity to step into a simpler life, even if just temporarily. She’d already started packing and shopping for ordinary clothes, not the designer outfits she was accustomed to, but plain and practical ones to suit her new role. The vibration of her phone signaled Gift’s message with the restaurant’s address. Smiling to herself, Sharon resolved to rest early. Tomorrow would be a pivotal day. The next morning, Sharon awoke to her alarm blaring at 9:15 AM. The sunlight streamed through her curtains, urging her to get up. She groaned, reaching out to hit the snooze button, but quickly remembered her plan. Jumping out of bed, she tangled herself in the bedsheets and landed on her butt with a loud thud. "Ow!" she winced, rubbing her sore spot. "Great start to the day," she muttered sarcastically. Determined not to let the mishap derail her, she made her way to the bathroom. After a quick shower and her usual routine, she selected a simple outfit. A pair of black pants, a blue tank top, and black sandals. She wanted to appear ordinary, someone who could easily blend into the life she was stepping into. In the kitchen, Sharon opted for a light breakfast, just a bowl of cereal, as her nerves churned in anticipation. She found her parents in the living room, her dad engrossed in the newspaper while her mom scrolled through her phone. "Good morning, Dad. Good morning, Mom," she greeted them, plopping down beside her father, who wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Morning, darling," her father said warmly. "Ready for the big day?" "Yes, Dad," Sharon replied, forcing a smile to ease his evident worry. "Good luck, dear," her mother added. "Make sure you eat something before you leave." By the time Sharon arrived near the restaurant, her nerves were in full swing. She parked her car several blocks away, her flashy Audi would raise too many questions if spotted in front of a modest restaurant. The restaurant wasn’t as small as she had imagined, but its cozy and welcoming ambiance eased her anxiety slightly. She noticed the noticeboard with the 'Waitress Needed' sign and took a deep breath before stepping inside. The interior was bustling with activity, the sound of utensils clinking and soft background music mingling with chatter. Sharon felt dozens of eyes on her as she made her way to the counter, where a petite girl with light skin and short hair stood, engrossed in her phone. "Hi," Sharon greeted her with a polite smile. "Hello!" the girl responded, returning the smile. Her name tag read Lily. "I’m here about the waitress position," Sharon explained, her voice betraying her nerves. Lily chuckled lightly. "No need to be so nervous. I’ll take you to the manager." "Thank you," Sharon said, relieved by Lily's friendly demeanor. Lily led Sharon to an office door and knocked lightly before peeking inside. "Mr. Marcus, someone’s here about the job." "Send her in," came the reply. Sharon entered the room, where a man in his mid-30s sat behind a desk. He stood up and offered his hand. "Good morning, Miss...?" "Sharon Davis," she replied, shaking his hand. "Please, take a seat," he gestured. The interview began with basic questions about her experience, and Sharon found herself spinning a web of lies to secure the position. She claimed prior experience as a waitress and fabricated a story about her previous workplace closing down. Despite her nerves, Sharon’s natural charm and ability to think on her feet won the manager over. "Well, Miss Davis, I’m happy to say you’ve got the job," Mr. Marcus announced with a smile. "Really? Thank you so much!" Sharon beamed. "You start Monday at 9 AM sharp. Make sure to leave your details with the accountant on your way out." As Sharon walked out of the office, she couldn’t contain her excitement. She hurried to the front desk, where Lily awaited her. "Did you get it?" Lily asked, grinning. "Yes, I did!" Sharon replied. "That’s great! Welcome to the team," Lily said warmly. After leaving her details, Sharon stepped out into the bright sunlight, feeling a newfound sense of accomplishment. For the first time, she had taken a step into a world so different from the life she knew. That evening, she finalized arrangements to move into her small, modest apartment. The space was far from what she was used to, but Sharon saw it as a stepping stone, a gateway to understanding the world beyond her privileged bubble. As she lay in bed that night, her thoughts raced with anticipation for Monday. This new chapter of her life was beginning, and Sharon was determined to embrace it fully.
