Victor didn’t say a word the entire drive back to Jake’s apartment. The alcohol burned warm in my veins, but my hands still shook in my lap. Rain streaked the windshield. Streetlights blurred past. Every few seconds I glanced at him — strong jaw clenched, knuckles white on the steering wheel, eyes dark with something I couldn’t name. Anger at his son. Heat for me, or maybe both. He parked right in front of the building. The same building where, less than two hours ago, I had caught Jake balls-deep in my best friend. Victor killed the engine and turned to me.
