A Spy

MARIUS' POV

It burned. Anger burned within me as I squeezed out the life of the letter my Beta had brought to me.

He bowed, obviously comfortable in contrast to me who could not get my emotions in check.

“Who sent this?” I probed with a deep frown etched to my face.

“Elder Lucine.” He responded. Of course. I scoffed. I knew he would be the one. He was the one championing the whole agenda and pushing for me to be kicked off the throne.

What other silly excuse would he have than saying I wasn’t getting any younger and I needed to give the pack a mother and also an heir if anything happens to me?

I clenched my fist and threw off the crumbled letter. He could go to hell for all I care.

“What is the report on the sales to the Bathwell pack?” I probed, paying minimal attention to any other thing.

“Sales have been going on well and they seem to want to do more business with us.” He spoke and that gladdened my heart. That was the news I loved to hear.

“That’s great. Make sure you give the traders what they deserve. We do not want anyone running at a loss.” I instructed him and he bowed but was quite hesitant to leave. “I know you have something to say so spill it out. What is it?”

“Forgive me, my Alpha. I do not mean to intrude but….. why don’t you give the elders what they want? Why don’t you do what they are asking? That way, you won’t receive this threat letters disguised as a letter of concern, to get you off the throne.” He responded.

“How is that even possible? We both know I do not have a woman in my life. I do not have a mate.” I threw my hands and looked away from him.

“That is because you do not want it, my Lord. There are a lot of ladies, a plethora of options to pick from. You can decide to choose any of them and make them your woman but we both know that you do not want to have any romantic entanglement with any lady.”

True. I watched my dad suffer in the hands of the woman he loved so much. I watched how love made him stupid and useless. I watched how love made him go through pain.

I was still so young and could not save him. I however made up my mind not to ever get myself in that mess. I would never be controlled like my father was.

“Let’s not ignore the fact that I do not have a wolf and they want me to provide a mate. How is that possible?” I scoffed.

“But no one knows you do not have a wolf, do they? Anything is possible, my Lord. If you want it, then it is possible.

We can find a way around it. We can do something about it. We both know you cannot run away or hide from this forever. The elders would always pressure you.

Elder Harry and Elder Leo never wanted you on the throne in the first place. I think you should be careful because they are willing to do anything possible to make sure you are dethroned. Please, make a decision really quickly, my Lord.

I can secretly sneak in some ladies whom you can choose from. Do not forget that you are to present your mate to everyone in three days and mark her, otherwise you lose your chance of being an Alpha.”

He was right. I was never supposed to be the Alpha. The late Alpha had taken me in as his when he lost his two sons in the battlefield.

I volunteered to join him for battles and thankfully, I have been able to conquer all and that was how I was crowned as the Alpha even though many kicked again the idea of a man who was barely known, be the Alpha.

How could they ignore all the good deeds and all the time I had risked my life for them?

I was however able to fight my way up and assume the position of the Alpha. I needed it more than anything and I was willing to do anything and everything to keep it.

“There are several maidens from far and near who would be glad to fill in this position. Once your title as the Alpha is renewed, you can decide to pay her off or you can do anything and we can decide on that later.

For now, we just have to get a lady first. One who would be perfect for the job.” He advised.

I saw how much he cared and I really did appreciate it but….. it wouldn’t work. How was I sure she wasn’t going to be a traitor? At that point, I could not trust anyone with the affair of the pack.

“We have to take it one step at a time. We have a lot of enemies who would not cease to use this opportunity to get what they want. I do not want you to help me get a woman. I will find her myself.”

“I know you do not want to be with any woman, my Lord but you need to understand that this is important. We can sort out any issue eventually. You just have to present someone to the pack during your coronation renewal ceremony.” He spoke.

My brows furrowed immediately. It was a very tough decision. It was hard to agree to want to have a woman sleep with me in the same room and who knows? On the same bed? Or a woman who would constantly come with me wherever I go?

It was disgusting to even think about but again, I had to do what I had to do.

“My Lord…..” one of the guards walked in frantically and bowed. “We just caught a spy.”
