Chapter 5: Innate Dual Elements (Part 1)

“Next…” “Next…” “Next…” “Zhang Hou!” The mud monkey, Zhang Hou, standing not too far from Mo Fan, glanced back and said, “Mo Fan Ge, I’m up.” “Go for it.” “Hmph, hope you get a Water element too,” Zhao Kunsan immediately chimed in with a cynical remark. Zhang Hou was a skinny kid. The moment he placed his hand on the stone, a strange vortex of wind appeared on the Awakening Stone, blowing the teacher’s robes slightly. “Very good, Wind element. You have decent talent. Cultivate well and don’t be lazy!” A look of satisfaction also appeared on Xue Musheng’s face. As the class teacher, Xue Musheng was delighted. With only a dozen or so students gone, his class already had two students with high-quality talent. If they worked hard, they could get into good universities. Of course, his greatest prize was student number 1, Mu Bai, with his outstanding Ice element talent and the backing of his Ice lineage—he was a future pillar of society. It looked like this year’s Class 8 had a chance to be at the top of the grade. “Next…” “Next…” “Next…” Poof~~~~~ On the Awakening Stone, an orange flame suddenly shot up. This scene made everyone in the class widen their eyes. “F-Fire… Fire element!!!” “Damn, and it’s a girl! What’s her name?” For a moment, the girl who had just awakened became the focus of the entire class. The Fire element was the most outstanding among all the elemental types. It was the first choice for all apprentice-level mages, if they had a choice. Unfortunately, the Fire element was rather elusive; its probability was low, with at most three in a class, not even a one-in-ten chance. “Her name is Zhou Min. I think she’s one of the teachers’ daughters,” someone whispered. “She’s pretty cute too. Gotta go get to know her.” “Be careful, though. Zhou Min looks quiet and well-behaved, but she’s actually got a violent streak. Otherwise, how would a girl like her awaken a Fire element?” “That makes sense, that makes sense.” “Like mother, like daughter. Teacher Wenhua should be very pleased to hear that,” Class Teacher Xue Musheng said. “Thank you, teacher.” “Next… Wind element.” “Next… Wind element.” “Teacher, I’m going to the rooftop. Don’t try to stop me,” the student with the Light element said. “Next… Water element.” “Light element student, wait for me! I’m coming with you to the rooftop.” “Next…” Finally, almost the entire class had awakened their elements. Mo Fan, clutching his student number 48, felt his heart pounding wildly. Probably no one was as nervous as Mo Fan. On one hand, he had only been exposed to magic for the last three months. On the other hand, he was genuinely worried he might fail to awaken! “Number 48, Mo Fan!” “It’s your turn!” Zhang Hou turned his head to encourage him. “You only got in by scraping the bottom of the barrel, so don’t get your hopes up. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a Water or Light element and be useless before you even reach the middle-tier. If you’re unlucky, you’ll fail to awaken, tsk tsk tsk, and lose everything.” Zhao Kunsan spewed more cynical remarks. “Can you just shut your damn mouth?” Zhang Hou said, a little angry. In Zhang Hou’s heart, Mo Fan was his big brother. Even though his magic grades were terrible and he got into magic high school through other means, he absolutely did not want to see Mo Fan awaken something worse than others. The nine years of compulsory magic education were meant to lay the foundation for awakening and provide the theoretical groundwork for future cultivation, so one wouldn’t be clueless. If you didn’t study well, you might not only fail to awaken but also find your cultivation stagnating. Mo Fan took a step forward, walking through the crowd. “That’s him, right? I heard he got in through the back door.” “Who’s that? He’s actually pretty handsome,” a cute little girl asked. “He’s a total slacker. I was in the class next to his,” another girl with a mushroom cut and a big mouth said. “Oh, really? Then his awakening is probably going to be bad.” “It’s even a question if he can awaken successfully.” “I’m just saying, to all you Holy Light and Flowing Water elements, don’t be discouraged! Just wait and watch this Mo Fan guy’s awakening, and you’ll feel much better. This dude scored in the single digits on the exam, his foundation is crap, and he’ll probably fail to awaken.” At this point, Zhao Kunsan, getting flustered by the cursing from Zhang Hou, just started mocking him loudly. The moment he said that, the Holy Light and Flowing Water element students really perked up. If someone had a freak awakening failure, that would really be… comforting. “No more talking!” Xue Musheng glared at the troublemaker, Zhao Kunsan. But Mu Bai’s lips curled into a slight smile. This was exactly what he wanted: for Mo Fan to be publicly humiliated. This guy was just trash; what right did he have to get close to the young miss, Mu Ningxue? He, Mu Bai, was so handsome, had such great magic talent, and worked so hard. Mu Ningxue should be close to him. “Trash, I heard your family sold their house just so you could have this awakening. If you fail, you should just find a river to jump in and end it all, to spare your family the shame,” Mu Bai whispered softly as Mo Fan passed by him. Mo Fan glanced at Mu Bai, suppressing the urge to curse the i***t, and walked up to the teacher, Xue Musheng. “Mo Fan, place your hands on this,” Xue Musheng said in a calm tone. As the class teacher, Xue Musheng was well aware of this student’s situation… He basically placed last on the magic entrance exam and only got into Tianlan Magic High School because of instructions from above. From what Xue Musheng understood, Mo Fan came from an ordinary family—no background, no talent, and grades too terrible to look at. Having a student like this in his class was a headache; it would easily drag down the class’s overall evaluation. Sigh, what rotten luck. Hopefully, this kid wouldn’t actually fail to awaken, or he’d really become the laughingstock of the entire grade. Mo Fan’s hand was trembling uncontrollably; he was still nervous. “Steady, don’t shake,” Xue Musheng reminded him. Mo Fan used his left hand to grip his right, finally managing to place his palm on the Awakening Stone. It was very cold. Maybe it was because the last person awakened an Ice element, but the whole stone felt cold… huh, wait, why was it starting to feel numb, and then hot? “Close your eyes. Feel your spiritual world!” Class Teacher Xue Musheng said. What a problem student. He doesn’t even know the basic procedure. Mo hurriedly did as he was told, closing his eyes. The so-called spiritual world, when a person closes their eyes, is a void in their mind. A normal person’s mind would constantly imagine things in that void, like blurry scenes from a movie. But when you completely emptied your mind and thought of nothing, it was just a void, like a starless night sky. There was nothing in his spiritual world. But the moment Mo Fan placed his hand on the Awakening Stone, he could feel a power like an electric current. This power traveled from his palm through his entire body. Then, as if possessing some magical force, it suddenly carved a purple arc across his void spiritual world—gorgeous, stunning, and soul-shaking!
