Saturday June 7
BLUE POV
I woke up in darkness, the fire had burnt down to embers. There was an arm cradled over me, keeping me safe and warm. Crew. I smiled to myself, this was the best birthday ever.
Birthday? SH*T! What time was it? Where was my phone? I wriggled free of my attentive captor and found my phone on the sofa. 2am! SH*T SH*T SH*T!!!
“Crew! Crew please wake up!” I pleaded, shaking him vigerously.
He opened one eye sleepily. “Hello, little luna, are you OK?” he whispered.
I shook my head. “Crew, it’s 2am, my aunt is going to kill me. I need to go home. Please, can you show me the way out?”
He stood up quickly, and ruffled his messy hair away from his eyes. He walked over to me and pulled me in for a hug and nuzzled my neck gently.
“Can I not keep you here as my prisoner?” He joked. “Not unless you want my aunt as your executioner,” I giggled back.
“Fine” he huffed, as he headed to the closet on the far side of the room.
He returned with a Lycan Academy varsity jacket that all the athletes got in their final year. He helped me slip into it. It came down to my knees. He was 6’4, so I wasn’t surprised.
“Can’t have you getting cold little luna,” he smiled at me and looked me up and down. “Plus you look way better in this than I do” he growled.
Without warning, he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, he grabbed my bag and my trainers and carried me out of the manor. I was laughing and begging him to drop me until we reached his car.
“I don’t mind walking home from here,” I said.
“Absolutely not! A little she wolf like you should never walk alone at night. You’re tiny, anything could happen to you! I’ll drive you home”, he replied defensively.
Maybe he had a point. I was small, and I’d never been in a fight before, and I had only ever shifted once before. I was pretty weak compared to most werewolves, I definitely wasn’t Luna material.
Urgh. I really didn’t want to think of that and the rejection right now. I needed to get home.
He opened the car door for me and I directed him to the dusty road leading to our tiny cottage.
“I can get out here,” I said as he turned onto the road. “It’s not far, I’ll be safe.”
In reality, I didn’t want him seeing where I lived. If he thought I was too weak to be Luna already, and he was going to reject me because of that, then seeing how poor his future luna was and where she lived would definitely seal the rejection deal.
He ignored me and continued to drive. I sunk into my seat. I had never been embarrassed about my home before, but I couldn’t help thinking now, that fate had made a mistake. How could someone like me, coming from a home like this, be fated to two powerful, rich alphas? I didn’t want Crew thinking the same.
“It’s just here,” I murmured as we came to a stop outside my gate. He just smiled, and looked up at my bedroom window. How did he know that was my room?
He turned to me and stroked my cheek. He sighed heavily, and I could see pain in his eyes.
“Luna” he whispered. “I’m so sorry you didn’t have the best birthday. And I’m so sorry you’ve been burdened with 2 idiots like me and Cole for mates. I hope you believed me when I said it wasn’t you, it was us. None of this is your fault and you shouldn’t have to suffer because of us,” he continued.
Oh no! Was he going to reject me here, now? Didn’t they both have to do it? I gripped my skirt tightly, trying not to fidget too much, or even worse, cry.
“There's so much that’s happening within the pack and the territories, that I can’t explain right now,” he sighed. “Because I’m not Luna material, right?” I hissed. I didn’t mean for it to come out quite so sarcastically, but I didn’t appreciate being tiptoed around.
“No little luna, not because of that, it’s because….”
He rubbed the back of his neck and I could see him trying to find the words of how to let me down gently.
“Because an alpha and a luna need to do what is best for the pack. It is our duty and our destiny to put the pack first. That is the responsibility that is distowed upon when we are born. And well, just like fate determines our mate, my path is already determined, for the good of the pack. My father and mother are currently visiting the Silver Claw Pack and the Blood Moon Pack in preparation for me and Cole to take over Lycan Moon next month when we turn 21. Everything is being done for the good of the people, our people, people like your aunt and friends,” he panted.
He was getting quite erratic now, like he was saying too much, but at the same time didn’t want to stop. He let out a pining moan before finishing his rant.
“And sadly, little Luna, that doesn’t include you. As much as I want it to. And you must believe me, by the Goddess Luna herself, I want it to include you, but it just isn’t what's right for the pack.”
Tears streamed down his face. I was floored. I wanted to get out of that car and slam the door in his face. My wolf wanted to comfort our pining mate. I sighed and used the sleeve of my jacket to wipe his tears, then I nuzzled his neck lovingly. I was such a push over.
He was obviously upset though. You couldn’t fake the look in his eyes, he did care for me. I could see that.
If I took an honest look at myself, I would also admit that I’m not strong enough or confident enough to be a luna. And that the pack did deserve better. The alphas deserved better. It wasn’t him, it was me, I just wasn’t luna material. But it hurt me so much, none the less.
He held my hand gently.
“I don’t want to refuse you little luna. And I won’t. I can’t. It would kill me and my wolf. But once we are crowned alpha’s next month, we won’t be able to be with you, no matter how badly we want to be. We have to give up our happiness for the good of the pack,” he sobbed.
“I know I am being selfish, but if you could maybe find it within you, to stay friends with me? I know it would make our wolves happy to be near one another. Though no one can know we are fated. It could put you in danger. I want to make sure you and your family are always taken care of, and I’ll make sure you never want….. for anything….. ever, “ he sniffed.
“Except you” I replied.
He hung his head shamefully and continued to cry quietly.
“I’ll need to have a think about it,” I said. “Refusing each other now will hurt, but not severing the mate bond and still not being together may ultimately be worse. I need some space to decide what's best.”
He nodded meekly, and kissed my hand. I kissed his in return and got out of the car. I waited until he drove away before I crept through the cottage door, ran to my room, shut my door and cried myself to sleep.
