The massive iron gates slowly swung open. Edward knelt in the mud, shivering from the cold. He looked up. I was wearing a silk nightgown, with Charles's black suit jacket draped over my shoulders. Charles stood beside me. A large black umbrella rested in his hand, shielding me completely from the rain. Not a single drop touched me. He slipped an arm around my shoulders and gently pulled me closer. "The wind's picking up. You'll catch a cold." Watching the intimacy between us, Edward's eyes turned bloodshot. He tried to get to his feet and rush toward me. But after kneeling for so long, his legs had gone numb. He stumbled and crashed face-first back into the muddy water. "Eleanor...
