A few months later, Edward's company officially completed its bankruptcy liquidation. Every asset under his name was auctioned off by the bank. Even then, he still owed tens of millions of dollars.
When he walked out of the detention center, he had nothing left, not even a dollar. He became a homeless drifter.
To avoid his creditors, Edward hid beneath highway overpasses during the day. At night, he wandered through dumpsters looking for something to eat.
One night, Edward was collecting cardboard in a dark alley.
Several beat-up vans suddenly screeched to a stop at the entrance. A group of men carrying baseball bats climbed out. Leading them was a loan shark's collector.
