Nathalie’s POV
Darkness stretches infinitely around me, thick and impenetrable. The air is crisp, almost too cold, biting at my skin through the thin fabric of my clothes. My breath escapes in shallow puffs, visible against the frigid air. My body feels weightless, yet heavy all at once, like I'm floating in an abyss with no end. The scent of damp earth and ancient trees fills my nostrils, grounding me to a reality I don't understand.
I blink, trying to make sense of where I am. A forest—deep and vast—surrounds me, the trees towering like silent guardians. Their leaves rustle with an unseen wind, whispering secrets I can't decipher. The night sky stretches endlessly above, a canvas of deep blues and blacks, but something is different. It isn't entirely dark. A strange silver glow pulses softly in the distance, shifting and dancing between the shadows.
A sudden wave of memories crashes into me, knocking the air from my lungs. The bridge. The cigarette. The fall. My hands tremble as they reach for my chest, feeling the dull ache that lingers there. Tears sting my eyes before spilling freely down my cheeks. A raw, aching sob rips from my throat as I collapse onto my knees, grief consuming me. This isn’t right. I was supposed to be gone. I was supposed to disappear into nothingness.
“Shhh, my child. Everything is alright now. You are safe.”
The voice is smooth, rich, and impossibly soothing. It wraps around me like silk, grounding me in a way I never thought possible. I freeze, my breath catching. Slowly, I lift my head, my tear-filled eyes searching for the source. A soft silver glow intensifies before me, coalescing into a radiant figure.
She is breathtaking. Her deep, luminous skin gleams under the silver light, giving her an otherworldly beauty. Long, white hair cascades down her back, moving as if caught in an eternal breeze. Her eyes—piercing ice-blue and shimmering with an ethereal glow—hold a depth I can’t begin to comprehend. I can only stare, mesmerized.
“Who…who are you?” My voice barely rises above a whisper, thick with emotion.
She smiles, a gentle yet powerful expression that eases the storm raging inside me. “I am Selene,” she says, her voice resonating with a divine authority. “Goddess of the Moon and guardian of the wolves.”
The title sends a shiver through me. Wolves? A faint memory of stories and myths flickers at the edge of my consciousness. I open my mouth to question her, but she continues.
“I heard your cries, your pleas, as you stood on the edge of that bridge,” Selene murmurs, kneeling before me. “I felt your sorrow, your desperation. No soul should ever feel so unloved.” She reaches out, her fingers grazing my cheek. A comforting warmth spreads through me at her touch. “So I have granted you another chance—a second life. One where you will be cherished, adored, and treasured as you deserve.”
Her words echo through me, wrapping around my heart. A second life? It sounds too unreal, too impossible. And yet… I am here. I feel her warmth. I hear her voice.
“Come,” she says, standing gracefully. “It is time.”
A gust of wind sweeps through the forest, carrying with it a chorus of howls. My breath hitches as silver shapes begin to emerge from the darkness. Wolves. Dozens of them. Their fur is as white as Selene’s hair, their eyes glowing with the same celestial light. They radiate power, their presence commanding, yet none of them feel threatening. Instead, they exude warmth, familiarity.
Among them, one steps forward. She is larger than the rest, her fur thick and immaculate, reflecting the moonlight like freshly fallen snow. Her deep golden eyes meet mine, and in them, I see something that shakes me to my core—recognition.
“I am Lyra,” she speaks, though her mouth never moves. Her voice reverberates inside my mind, smooth yet commanding. “From now on, you will never be alone. I will be with you, always.”
My heart stutters. “With me…?”
Lyra steps closer, pressing her forehead against mine. A strange warmth floods through me, like the merging of two souls. Images flash behind my eyes—of running, of hunting, of the wind whipping through my fur.
Selene watches, her expression soft with approval. “She is yours,” the goddess murmurs. “A gift, a guardian, a part of you. Together, you will be stronger.”
I reach out, running my fingers through Lyra’s fur. It’s impossibly soft, like clouds spun into silk. “So…you’ll live inside me?”
Lyra nods. “We are one now. Both in human form and wolf.”
A chuckle escapes me, light and unexpected. “I guess that makes us roommates.”
Lyra huffs, an amused glint in her eyes.
After a moment, she tilts her head. "But there is something more you must know, Nathalie."
I frown, sensing her seriousness. "What is it?"
"I will also guide you to your mate," Lyra explains. "A mate is more than just a partner. They are your other half, the one meant to stand beside you through all things. Your bond is written in the stars."
A strange warmth spreads in my chest at her words, and without hesitation, I whisper, "I already found her."
Lyra’s ears perk up. "You have? How do you know?"
A soft smile tugs at my lips as I recall that moment. "She saved me. Her name is Kiara."
Lyra repeats the name, almost as if testing how it feels on her tongue. "Kiara..." Her voice hums through my mind, and to my surprise, a low, pleased sound rumbles from her throat—a soft, contented purr.
I blink before laughing lightly. "Did you just purr?"
Lyra shakes out her fur, clearly unbothered. "It would seem you are not the only one who feels something when you say her name."
My cheeks warm, my heart suddenly hammering in my chest. But before I can dwell on the feeling, the forest begins to shift, flickering at the edges of my vision. A disorienting pull tugs at me, a voice echoing from somewhere beyond.
“Nathalie…”
My name. Distant, yet familiar.
My head whips up, searching for the source. “What’s happening?”
Lyra’s ears twitch. “It’s time to return. Don’t be afraid. When you wake up, I’ll be with you.”
The voice grows clearer. “Wake up.”
The world around me dissolves into light. The last thing I hear is Lyra’s gentle whisper. “Your fate awaits.”
