Chapter 3: Alexander the Great

823 Words
My best friend Layla and I plopped our bookbags on the cafeteria table and sighed at my pathetic lunch.    “How is that even legal?”  She said as she grimaced at my tray.  “Like, what it is?”  She pushed her tight, black curls out of her face and leaned in, her nose sticking up as she inhaled.   “I think it is meatloaf.”  I said as I began excavating my meal with a fork.    “Here, take my apple and bag of chips.  You should not be forced to eat a potentially contaminated mystery meat.”   She rolled the apple and tossed me the chips from her home packed lunch.   Most grateful, I dug in.   “So, what are you going to do about the college application.  From what you told me; I would be worried he is going to write you a negative letter of recommendation.   Then what, your hopes and dreams about this college are going to collapse.  And!  Worst of all, you will have to wait like three months for a letter of rejections from the school.  I would rather know sooner!” Layla said as she took a huge bit of her vegan, lettuce wrap.   That was Layla for you.  Loyal to a fault and a little dramatic, but I loved her.  We were total opposites; she was not average at all.  Her beautiful deep skin was the color of chocolate, her curly hair was perfection itself, and her face was pretty and kind. She was outspoken and never took crap from anyone.  She stood her ground and protected her friends.  I was lucky enough to consider her my best friend.  We have known each other since we were 5.   “Well, what I am supposed to do about that.  The letter and survey Mr. Hatfield is supposed to send into Earlstone is sealed.  I am not allowed to see it or read it for that matter.  My fate is literally in his hands. I just know if he writes me a decent letter, I should at least get through to the interview phase and at least give me a chance.  He graduated from Earlstone, and what I have heard, has made many donations to the school.  He has influence!”  I took a bit of apple and pushed the meatloaf just a little further from me. “Exactly!  Don’t you see?  Your entire fate is in Mr. Hatfield’s hands!  If he says something bad about you, your done!  You said it yourself, you won’t get in, you won’t even have a chance.”  Her poor lettuce wrap flung around as she spoke.   Her passion and care for me was clear.  She was right.  How could I possibly let one person determine my future.  My mind spun as I grasped for an answer,  however, I was quickly interrupted.   The entire feel and atmosphere of the cafeteria changed.  Its once quiet mood was shattered with the chanting and cheering of a large crowd.  The boy's basketball team barged in through the double doors and demanded attention.  If it wasn't already loud enough, the cheer leading team followed suit  circling around the group of boys.     The boy in the front captured all the cheerleader’s eyes.     Alexander Great.  Yup, you read that correctly.  The boy had conquered the school when he moved here last year.  This baby blue eyes, his long blond hair, and tight body always caused hearts to stir.  His perfect smile could slay the darkest of hearts.  As head of the basketball team, he demanded attention, not that he had any competition.     "Alexander the Great!  Alexander the Great!  Go bulldogs!  Go bulldogs!"  The teams shouted.  Many of the basketball team began roughhousing and shoving each other around. The cheerleaders tightening their circle around Alex.   "Now girls, don't crowd,  there is always enough of me to go around.  Now who is first?"  He smiled as he surveyed his choices.  The high pitched "Me, Me"  and "pick mes!" were ear piercing.  In one swift movement, Alex took the bombshell blonde on his right and swept her into his arms. His lips were instantly on hers.  The kiss was deep and escalated quickly.  The whole team erupted into cheers again.      Alex and the blonde moved together and laid down on one of the cafeteria tables and proceeded in their activity.     "What... the... hell."  Layla said, rolling her eyes and returned to her meal.   I kept my eyes on the two for a moment longer, watching Alex rub his hands up and down the cheerleader.  He was one hot guy, but who the heck acts this way.  I know he was considered a playboy, but did he have to remind us all right in the middle of cafeteria.   The scene changed quickly as Mr. Paynes the principle burst through the door.  Lots of yelling and commotion continued filling the room. Mr. Paynes proceeded to escorted Alex out, but not quick enough.  Alex grabbed a different girl into a quick embrace.  The boys cheered again.  Mr. Paynes pulled them apart and dragged Alex out of sight.
