Chapter 8: A Dash of Spice

It was Monday morning, and I had just grabbed my backpack and headed out the door towards school.  My brother Tyler usually drove me, but he never came home last night.  He used to do that sometimes, when the stress at home became too overwhelming, he took a break away from it all.  I, unfortunately, I didn’t have that option.  Well, I guess I did, but I wouldn’t ever do that.   I put my hands in my pocket and kicked a small rock down the sidewalk.  The February weather was chilly and the wind bit into my skin a little.  I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket.  I pulled it out and brought it close to my chest.  Damn, this wind was getting worse.    Alex’s name appeared on my home screen.  Alex?  What was he texting me for?  We had exchanged numbers, but I never actually thought he
