Author’s NotesI started writing this book without knowing it, about fifteen years ago, when I picked up a copy of J. Douglas Harvey’s Boys, Bombs and Brussels Sprouts in the library where I worked. I have always been interested in military history, but his account of the bomber war was quite different from the more technical, factual books about World War II that I was used to reading.
It was in Harvey’s book that I first learned about the Lack of Moral Fibre designation, and I was quite affected by it. It was antithetical to the excitement and adventure I had previously thought war to involve. And the more I learned about the terrible consequences of the bomber war — on both sides — the more difficult it became to grapple with the big questions I formerly took for granted.
