Chapter 12I startle awake, panting and gasping for breath. Pain shoots up my arm. I cry out to an empty apartment. I fall back onto the bed, curl up like a scared child, clutching my arm and yelling out for Steve. The voice dies, weakens, and fades like a dying breath. My head spins from the beers—a cold fog slips into the crevices of my dreams. The rest of my body aches and I shiver from the cold dampness skulking at the edge of the room, near the open balcony doors. I sit up slowly, groaning against the prickling heat of pain running through me. I stroll to the bathroom to dry swallow two more Tylenol.
