Chapter 13I lose control of my weapon and fall to the floor. I stumble in the dark for my pistol, clamor to my feet, and aim the gun around the room. I get a good look at the corner where the dark, shadowy figure stood earlier, between the balcony doors and bookcase. Nothing. I run to the side of the bed and flip on the light. When I turn around, the room is empty. The elongated figure leaning against the far wall in the corner is the metal coat rack I fished out of storage yesterday. A tall, angular sculpture, hunched forward like a broken spine. I close and lock the balcony doors and stare out into the night.
