Chapter 15The room is stifling when I wake two hours before work. Pale light trickles into the room. My arm hurts when I move it, the length of it numb and prickly from sleeping on it all night. Making coffee is a chore. I spill coffee beans across the counter and floor as I attempt to brew a decent cup. Later I shower, but the lukewarm water sputters from the scum-crusted showerhead as I grumble under my tired breath to wake up. When I step out into the bedroom, drying off my damp skin, I freeze, my heartbeat pulses at the sight of the bedroom door cracked open. “Hello?” Silence. Between the balcony doors and the east-side windows, the far corner of the room looks uninhabitable. No ghosts or visitors. There is nowhere to hide in this wide-open space. I walk over to the nightstand
