Chapter 29Chief Barnaby stands at the top of the staircase leading to the second-floor landing when I arrive at the address on Larkin Street. The pounding rain sounds like an approaching war. I shut off my car and watch the police chief through the rain-splattered windshield as he stands under metal eaves directing orders at the other rookies. Rain and wind slam the side of the car. I wonder why I am here as I get out and dash across the parking lot to the wooden staircase. An ambulance is parked by the side of the building. The area is drowned in red and blue lights from three department vehicles. “What took you so long?” Barnaby growls over the raging wind. I hold my arms over my head to protect myself from the rain, but it is only making things worse. I am drenched, wiping water
