Chapter 26I duck and dive behind a bush, scraping my face on the tarmac. My heart pounds. I am too slow to get up and notice the make and model of the car in the evening dusk. Panting, I stare around the area. There is nobody else on the street but me. Music blares out from a window in the apartment building across the street. Did anybody else hear the gunshot? I wince against a burning pain in my head and neck, and my right arm aches like an abscessed tooth. I limp to the end of the street, turning in the direction from which the car sped off. The street is vacant. I hobble to my car. Get in. Contemplate my next move. After a few minutes, I decide to call the police chief and make a report.
