Chapter 34“What kind of guy do you want?” Derek Sander asks his girlfriend, Christina. The mayor’s daughter sits on the rocky ledge of the landing downtown, staring out onto Lake Champlain, the water rushing by them with unbridled abandonment. She turns and squints against the setting sun, her strawberry blonde hair sparkling in the honey light. “Why do you keep asking me that stupid question?” Derek climbs up the long, twisted limb of an elm tree by the riverfront and sits in the thick crook of it. “You don’t seem like you’re into me anymore.” Christina breaks off a blade of grass and puts it into her mouth, sucking on it. “Any animal could’ve pissed on that piece of grass,” he says.
