*Kyan* “What’s the matter, son?” My mother’s voice cuts through all the jumbled thoughts in my head. We’ve gone for a walk in her favorite rose garden, and she’s been pointing out all of her most favorite flowers to me, as well as the new plants she asked the gardeners to put in. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have any trouble at all paying attention to her talk about one of her favorite hobbies, but today, it’s a struggle. No matter how hard I try, I can’t keep my mind off the situation back at the academy. It’s stupid. I’m stupid. And I don’t know how to answer her. So I lie. “Uh, I saw this girl at the train station today.” I begin. That part is true. “She was beautiful.” Also true. “But… she was going to another pack, and I’m pretty sure I’ll never see her again.” Mom arches an eyebrow
