The bird’s message

821 Words
Annabel had no contacts on her phone except her parents, making it impossible for her to text anyone on social media. She thought about asking the choirmaster for his number, as she couldn't stop thinking about him. But he only came for rehearsals on Fridays, and she hoped to get his contact the next time she saw him. The nun Annabel had slapped walked up to her and apologized for taking her phone. Annabel apologized for slapping her. They hugged each other and became friends. The nun would often come to Annabel to ask for help. Annabel was sitting on her bed when a bird came to her window and dropped a piece of paper. This was strange. Annabel became scared and slowly went to the window where the paper was. She looked around to make sure no one was watching before picking it up. The paper was full of sand and dried leaves. She opened the paper with her heart racing, her eyes widening as she read the message: "WELCOME." She began to question her intuition. "Who was this message sent to?" she muttered. "Welcome to where exactly?" The convent began to scare her. Her bed was close to the window. She quickly grabbed her phone and packed a few things before going back to Sister Majella's room. This time, she stayed for a while. Instead of watching videos in the room, she went down to the cloister area in the garden. While Annabel stayed with Sister Majella in her room, Sister Majella used the opportunity to ask Annabel a few questions. This was unusual, but Annabel was a smart girl. Annabel was always on her phone, especially after the incident that almost got her suspended. She had vowed never to be careless with it again. She kept maneuvering her answers to Sister Majella, as though they had been programmed in her head. Sister Majella wasn't convinced enough with Annabel's conversation, she just allowed her to be. Later on that day, they had their evening mass. Annabel expected to see a new altar server but was surprised to see a senior nun leading the mass in the chapel that evening. This made the service really boring and exhausting, Annabel literally dozed till the end of the service. After a while, her Dad called to say "hello" to her and also let her know her mum is sick and wouldn't be able to come see her on the visiting day. This made Annabel so worried, she was the closest to her mum. After ending the call with her dad, she hurriedly went in search of Sister Majella, to tell what her father said. Sister Majella comforted her and assured her that her mum will be fine. It was another Friday, a day the choirmaster comes to the chapel for rehearsals. Annabel took her time to dress so well, lined her eye, added powder to her face, and wore an inner brassiere that makes the boobs go up, all for the choirmaster to be drawn to her for the second time. As she approached the chapel, she intentionally removed one of her buttons again, but this time the choirmaster came prepared. He noticed her silly movements during his teachings but stood steadfast and overcame her. After the classes, he called her out and sighted a warning to her “Do not get me angry with your Jezebel character” he said angrily. “Go back and tell who sent you that I am a child of God” he continued. Annabel was left in shock as she didn’t see this coming her way, she only thought the feelings she had for him was mutual. Annabel was so disappointed and left the chapel angrily. This was how she lost him and couldn’t even collect his contact. Few days later, in the refectory, Annabel was asked to lead the prayer before the meal. It was a tradition there, whenever they wanted to have their meal, there is time for prayers. Just when she was about to start the prayer, she saw that same bird that dropped the first letter on the window beside her bed, on seeing it coming towards her direction, she fainted. Everyone rushed and few people carried her to the sick bay where she was attended to. “This wasn’t just ordinary” Sis Majella kept saying this to herself. She added that it was strange for it to happen to a nun in their convent, it had been a while since things like this happened. Annabel on the sick bed couldn’t explain to anyone what was going on, she only felt it was due to anxiety or trauma of what she witnessed with her eyes on the previous encounter. At this point in Annabel’s life, she couldn’t pray to release herself from fear of the unknown. She only ran to Sister Majella when she feels like there is trouble around.
