Nathaniel took a long breath. He finally turned to face me. He hesitated before he spoke,
"It wasn't a car accident. Was it?"
My face was ghost white. I couldn't nod. I couldn't shake my head either. I just kept my eyes down and dug my nails into my palm like I was trying to punish myself.
"You're going to explain this to me. Why were you on the highway? First, pregnancy. Then, miscarriage. What the hell happened?" His voice went up sharp. The shock and the hurt in his eyes were impossible to miss. "Talk."
I lifted my head slowly. I met his disappointed stare. And everything I'd been holding in just broke open. I screamed back at him with every ounce of strength I had.
"It's my business. What does it have to do with you? I don't need you to tell me what to do!"
Nathaniel let out a cold laugh. He stepped back, putting some distance between us.
"Elena Brooks, you got knocked up by some random guy. You've really done it this time. I wish you'd just died out there."
Something closed around my heart. I went cold all over.
Two figures appeared in the doorway.
"Elena, what are you doing here?"
"Damian, I told you I'm fine. I don't get why you had to drag me to the hospital."
Camilla was glued to Damian's arm. They were walking down the hallway. Damian had caught a glimpse of me through the door that wasn't fully closed, half lying in the hospital bed. He walked in fast. His brow furrowed when he saw how pale I was.
Nathaniel acted like he finally had backup. The accusations came one after another.
"Someone got her pregnant. And now she's lost the baby. Can you believe it?"
He jabbed his finger at my face. "You've shamed this entire family."
"Pregnant... Lost the baby."
Damian said the words slowly. Turning them over in his mouth. His eyes swept over me. Camilla shifted behind him, clearly annoyed.
"Damian, you said you were taking me home to meet your parents. When are we leaving?"
He acted like he didn't even hear her. His eyes stayed locked on me.
His voice was ice.
"Who's the father?"
