Klaus jolted upright in bed, yelling. In a second, Elena was next to him, supporting his shaking body. His inhalation was labored, and his eyes lit up a faint gold. "Don't worry Dear." I'm present. However, Klaus was avoiding eye contact with her. His gaze was fixed on the window. Outside, there was a flicker of a shadow. However, Elena sensed it in her bones. A caution. She whispered a spell and retrieved the tiny crystal that was concealed beneath his mattress. After a brief moment of shimmering, the air settled. The wards would remain in place. She hoped. “Mommy,” Klaus whispered. "A man is present." With my eyes. Elena stopped. Her heart ceased beating. "What were you saying?" Klaus blinked slowly. "I had a dream about him." He was upset. He wasn't bad, though. Simply put, it hurts. Damon. In her heart, she knew it. Her son had sensed the rattling of the bonds she had buried. Klaus held her closer. "I was fired," he said. I could set the world on fire. However, I don't want to. Elena drew him in and rocked him gently. She interspersed soothing spells with lullabies from her own early years. She assured him, "You're not alone." "You're never by yourself." But part of her wondered if that was a promise she could keep.
