Chapter 16: Vivienne's Last Move

1065 Words
The call came at 4AM. "Ms. Cole," Selena said, voice shaking. "You need to come downstairs. Now." Damien was already up. Suit on. Face hard. "What is it?" I asked, pulling on a robe. "Vivienne," he said. "She’s here." --- Lobby of Cole Tower. Vivienne. With lawyers. With cameras. With a court order. "Damien Cole," her lawyer said. "This is a court order to freeze all company assets pending investigation. And a restraining order. You are to stay 500 feet away from Ava Cole." My blood turned to ice. "What?" I whispered. "She’s claiming domestic abuse," Selena said quietly. "That you’re being held against your will." Damien stepped in front of me. "That’s a lie." "Prove it," Vivienne said, smiling. "In court." She looked at me. "Come with me, Ava. We can protect you. And the baby." I moved closer to Damien. "I’m not going anywhere with you." "You don’t have a choice," Vivienne said. "The order—" "I do have a choice," I said, louder. "And I choose him." Vivienne’s smile dropped. "You ungrateful little—" "Don’t," Damien said, voice deadly. "Don’t talk to my wife." "Your wife?" Vivienne laughed. "A marriage that happened 48 hours after I filed the injunction? A judge will throw that out." She turned to the cameras. "This is what Cole Corp does. Hides abuse. Hides fraud." --- Back in the penthouse, chaos. Lawyers. Phones. The board calling. Stock dropping. "She’s going to take the company," Selena said. "And you, Ava." "She can’t have either," Damien said. He was pacing. Furious. "Legal says we fight it. 2 weeks minimum." "I don’t have 2 weeks," I said. "She’ll drag my name through—" My phone buzzed. Unknown number. Video attached. I opened it. Me. In the hospital. Crying. Damien holding me. "Please don’t leave me," I sobbed on the video. "Please." Caption: _"Proof of abuse. Cole is manipulating her."_ It was from the night I fainted. Edited. Cut. Making it look like I was scared of him. I threw my phone. "She’s insane!" "She’s desperate," Damien said. He picked up the phone. Deleted the video. "Because she’s losing." He looked at me. "Ava. We have to leave." "What?" "Tonight. Private jet. Somewhere she can’t touch us. Somewhere we can fight this." I stared at him. "You want to run?" "I want to protect you," he said. "And Cole." --- We packed in 20 minutes. Clothes. Documents. The ultrasound photos. Nothing else. Selena drove us to the private airport. No press. Back entrance. On the jet, Damien held my hand. "I’m sorry," he said. "I should have stopped her months ago." "Don’t," I said. "Don’t apologize. We’re doing this together." He nodded. Pulled me into his lap. "Where are we going?" I asked. "My cabin. Montana. No one knows about it." "For how long?" "As long as it takes," he said. --- Montana. Snow. Mountains. The cabin was small. 2 bedrooms. Fireplace. No staff. No security cameras. Just us. For the first 24 hours, we didn’t talk about it. We cooked. Badly. We walked in the snow. Damien taught me how to build a fire. "Like this," he said, kneeling. "You need air." "Like my lungs?" I joked. "Exactly," he smiled. "Like your lungs." At night, we sat by the fire. Blankets. Tea. His hand on my stomach. "Do you think she’ll find us?" I asked. "No," Damien said. "And if she does, I’ll handle it." He said it like a promise. --- On day 3, she found us. Helicopters. News vans at the gate. Vivienne, standing at the door with police. "Damien Cole! Open up! We have a warrant!" Damien stood up. Calm. "Stay here," he told me. "No," I said. "I’m coming." We opened the door together. "Vivienne," Damien said. "You’re trespassing." "This is my company’s property," she said. "And you’re kidnapping Mrs. Cole." "I’m her husband," Damien said. "She came willingly." Vivienne looked at me. "Ava. Come home. We can help you." "I am home," I said. "With my husband." The police looked uncomfortable. "Ma’am," one said to Vivienne. "Do you have proof of abuse?" "I have video," she said. "Video that was illegally obtained and edited," Damien said. "We have the original. Want to see it?" He pulled out his phone. Played the full video. Me crying. Him comforting me. "I’ve got you," he said on the video. "I’ve got you." The police officer frowned at Vivienne. "This doesn’t look like abuse, ma’am." Vivienne’s face went red. "You don’t understand—" "I understand," I said. "That you want to control us. That you want the company. That you want to hurt us." I stepped forward. 16 weeks now. Showing. "This is my husband," I said. "This is my son. And you will not touch either of us." Silence. Then the lead officer. "Mrs. Hart. You need to leave. Now." Vivienne stared at me. "This isn’t over," she said quietly. "It is," Damien said. "For you, it is." Security escorted her out. --- That night, it was just us again. But different. Because she was gone. Really gone. Damien built the fire. I sat on the floor in front of it. He came and sat behind me. Arms around me. Chin on my shoulder. "Is it over?" I whispered. "For her, yes," he said. "Legal is filing criminal charges tomorrow. HIPAA. Harassment. Fraud." "And us?" "Us," he said, kissing my temple. "Us is just beginning." He turned me to face him. "Ava," he said. "Yeah?" "I’m sorry it took this. To get us here. Away from everything." "Don’t be," I said. "I needed this. To know it’s you and me. Against the world." He nodded. "I love you," he said. "I love you too," I said. He kissed me. Slow. Deep. Like he was claiming me. Like he was promising. --- The next morning, the news broke. "VIVIENNE HART ARRESTED" "CHARGES: HIPAA VIOLATION, FRAUD, HARASSMENT" "DAMIEN COLE CLEARED" Cole Corp stock soared. #TeamAva won. We watched it from the cabin. In sweats. Eating cereal. "So," Damien said. "What now?" "Now," I said, leaning on him. "We go home. And we raise Cole." "And get married. For real. Church." "And get married," I agreed. He kissed my forehead. "Thank you," he said. "For fighting." "Thank you," I said. "For choosing me." Outside, the snow was falling. Inside, the war was over. And we had won.
