Lying there, silently in my bed, praying that sleep comes to me soon, but knowing once it does, she will join me in my dreams. Looking over at my clock once more, seven thirty AM, “welp, looks like sleep has abandoned me once again.” I think to myself as I see the sunlight peek through the curtains on my window.
Eventually, I find the strength to get out of bed and get dressed for the day. Making my way downstairs, the smell of eggs, bacon, and coffee fills my nostrils. “Good morning, Fenris. Did you sleep okay?” My mother asks, looking over her shoulder, then back to the stove.
Not replying, I grab a cup and pour myself some coffee as she sets a big plate of breakfast in front of me. “Eat up, you’ve got school in thirty minutes.” She says, kissing the top of my head and heading into the living room for he morning routine of eight AM news and daily tasks.
After I finished eating, I put my dishes in the sink and headed off to school. As I pull into the parking lot, I see Nova and Zephyr walking up to my car. “god, you look like s**t, dude,” Nova says, laughing. “What happened to you? Did you get mauled by a bear or something?” She continues.
Giving her a tired look, her laughter pauses, “damn dude, what's wrong, you look like you wanna die?” She asks in a conceering tone
“I haven’t slept for longer than an hour in like two days, I keep having this recurring dream and then on top of that Serena reappeared and I all of a sudden after like three years wants to “reconnect” and now every time I can’t stop thinking about all the good times and memories we had together,” I reply before walking towards the schools front entrance just wanting the day to end but knowing its only eight AM. They just kind of stare at me with a blank expression on their faces, obviously not knowing what to say to my statement. “Just change the subject, I don't wanna think about her or my dreams for the rest of my life,” I stated, then walked inside just in time to hear the bell for first period ring.
Entering the classroom, I look around for the most secluded desk I could find, when suddenly I spot a familiar face, “What the f**k is she doing here?” I ask myself as I make eye contact with Serena, but ignore the fact that she exists and head to the only desk available that is far, far away from her.
“Settle down now, class,” the professor says loudly, signaling that class is beginning. “Today, we will learn about Romeo and Juliet. We will start today's lesson off with an out loud reading, and then, after, we will have a class discussion about our takes on the storyline.”
“You-have-got-to-be-f*****g-kidding” I mumble out loud by accident, but apparently only loud enough for the surrounding desks to hear me because only a few people turned to look in my direction.
Listening to everyone around me take turns reading it felt like I was listening to a monotonous audiobook, and I nearly fell asleep when there was a loud voice over the intercom, “Good morning, student body, this is Head Master Thasher. I need the following students to report to the cafeteria to prepare for today's activities.” The Head Master says before listing off about fifteen names, and then immediately following is the release bell ending first period.
“Thank the Moon Goddess,” I say to myself, grabbing my things and exiting the room.
“Fenris! Fenris, wait!” I hear Serena yelling from down the hall, “Fenris, please, talk to me,” she pleads, stopping me in my tracks
“What Serena? What do you want? Why are you here? I thought I told you to leave and go back to your home?” I yell, not realizing it.
“You did, but that's what I was trying to tell you last night before you stormed off. I can’t leave and go home because I’m back for good, my family transferred me here to stay with my Aunt and Uncle while they are out of the country for some vary important pack business.” She said, but her words hit my ears like she was speaking a foreign language.
“Great, so now not only have you invaded my home, but you’ve also now invaded my school, that’s just f*****g perfect,” I replied in a low venomous tone. “Look, obviously I can’t avoid seeing you now that you're a student here, but let me make one thing clear, I do not want to see or speak to you. I have no intentions of us “fixing things” and “going back to the way we were. I do not know how to make this much more clear. So maybe this will make it through that pretty blonde head of yours. I loved you and you left. I loved you and you abandoned me. I loved you and you shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. Because of that the love that I had for you has now turned to hate. So do me a favor and leave me the f**k alone.” The words came out like poison, and I very much meant every single one of them. The only issue with that is, with her being around permanently, I don’t know how long that hate will stay, before she inevitably breaks me, and my heart starts longing for her once more.
I continue throughout the day, struggling with every agonizingly boring class lesson until finally four o’clock hits and we get to go home. Exiting the classroom, I see Serena walking in my direction. I quickly dart into the nearest room before she could see me. I peek out of the small glass window of the door to see if the coast was clear before exiting back into the hallway. “Avoiding someone, are we?” A voice says from behind me . As I turned around to see who was talking to me I realized it was Head Master Thasher.
“N-no, of course not, I was just uh, looking for Nova. Yeah, we were supposed to meet up after school .This is her last period, so I came in looking for her, but since she isn’t here so I was just leaving.”
“Now, now Mr. Steelheart, we both know that that isn’t the truth.School policy states that once the final bell rings calling for the end of the school day the only students allowed to be in these halls are the ones who are in after school activities. Which means you either joined a school club, or your avoiding someone because your up to no good. So tell me which one is it Mr. Steelheart?”
“I uh-“ I begin to reply, searching for a really good excuse, but am failing miserably. “Ugh, fine, I was avoiding someone, but I promise you it wasn’t because I was getting into any kind of trouble or anything.” I start to plead my case before she cuts me off.
“My office." She said sternly. It looks like I need to call your mother.”
“My mother? For what? I haven't even done anything? Also I’m an adult in college, why are you calling my mother?” I yell .
“First, you're breaking into classrooms after hours. Then you lie to me about it. Finally I do believe you are up to no good, so maybe your mother can get the truth out of you. Since I obviously can’t.” Following behind her, we walk to her office. Once she is seated at her desk, she picks up the phone and begins to dial my mother's number.
“Wait! Okay, okay, I’ll tell you the truth,” I yell, which causes Head Master Thasher to pause mid-dialing. “The truth is, I was avoiding someone, but it wasn't because I was up to no good. Its because theres a new student, well, she isn’t really new more like returning but thats besides the point. I was avoiding her because I don’t want to see or talk to her. So, when I saw her heading my way down the hall after eight period I panicked and darted into the first room I saw. I swear I didn’t break into the classroom. The door was unlocked and I had to hide quickly before she saw me.”I stated running out of breath.
“Is that so? And why are you avoiding her? What did you do that made you not want to communicate with this student?”
“I didn’t do anything, it's personal, and I don't want to tell you about it, but I promise it’s the truth. Please, if you call my mother'', I paused with a sigh and my voice dropping, "I’ll have to tell her, and it’ll be this whole ordeal, and I really just want to forget about it and move on.”I plead to her.
“Fine, I’ll let you go this time Mr. Steelheart. But if I catch you in this building hiding in classrooms after school hours or doing anything else suspicious again, I won't be so lenient. Do you understand?” She asks me with a stern tone.
“Yes, ma’am, I promise it won't happen again, thank you.” I exit from her office and headed home.
I felt the need to get some fresh air and clear my head. So I decided to take the long way home. I wasn’t in a hurry. It was a nice warm sunny day so I wanted to extend my drive. I needed to try to find some kind of peace before running into Serena again.
Once I arrived home, I saw three cars in the driveway, my mom's and two I didn’t recognize. Entering the house, I hear my mom talking to someone whose voice I didn’t recognize. “Fenris, we have guests sweetie. Come say hello.” I hear my mother call from the living room. So I walk in to see who it is. Lone be hold sitting on the couch is Serena, her Aunt Sarah, and her uncle Henry. “Fenris sweetie you remember Mr and Mrs Stronghold don’t you? You used to play at their house with Serena every weekend.” My mother asks
“Yes, mother, I remember them,” I say. “Hello, Mr and Mrs. Stronghold, it’s nice to see you again. I would love to stay and chat, but I have a ton of homework to do.” I stated before heading upstairs and locking myself in my room.
Throwing on my sweats, and sitting down to get to work . I turn on music and stated to pull out my books so I can start my homework. Hoping the distraction would help me. I did not want to leave for the rest of the evening unless I absolutely had to.
A few hours later, deep into my studies I hear a knock at my door. “Who could that possibly be?” I ask myself before getting up to open the door. Opening it up I see Serena standing there in the entrance . She is wearing a black silk night dress so sheer I could almost see right through it, and her robe tied just enough to rest on her hips. Her hair is in a messy bun with one strand sitting on the side of her face . Unable to break my gaze of the sight of her. Stunned I could not speak a single word. “Fenris, can we talk?”She said in a low seductive voice.
