The Billionaire’s Offer

965 Words
Clara barely slept. The black business card rested on her bedside table, its silver lettering catching the first rays of the morning sun. Damian Knight. CEO, Knight Global Holdings. Who was he? More importantly, how did he know about her father’s debt? She picked up the card again before slipping it into her handbag. At exactly 8:55 a.m., a sleek black Rolls-Royce stopped outside her house. A tall man dressed in a tailored black suit stepped out and opened the rear door. “Miss Clara Hayes?” She hesitated before nodding. “Mr. Knight is waiting.” Without another word, she climbed into the car. The drive was silent. As they entered the city’s financial district, Clara stared through the window in amazement. Towering skyscrapers stretched into the sky, their glass walls reflecting the morning light. The car finally stopped in front of the tallest building she had ever seen. A giant silver sign read: KNIGHT GLOBAL HOLDINGS Her heart skipped a beat. She suddenly felt out of place in her simple cream blouse and black skirt. Inside, the lobby was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling while polished marble floors reflected every step. Employees greeted each other professionally as they hurried past. Everyone seemed to know exactly where they were going. Except her. “Please follow me,” the driver said. He escorted her to a private elevator that required a fingerprint scan before the doors opened. As the elevator rose, Clara’s heartbeat grew faster. The doors slid open on the top floor. A beautiful receptionist smiled politely. “Mr. Knight is expecting you.” She led Clara to a pair of enormous black doors. After a gentle knock, a deep voice answered. “Come in.” The office was larger than Clara’s entire apartment. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline. Bookshelves lined one wall, while modern artwork decorated another. Standing beside the window was a man in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit. He turned slowly. Clara forgot how to breathe. He was impossibly handsome. His dark hair was neatly styled, his sharp jawline gave him a commanding presence, and his piercing gray eyes held an intensity that made her feel completely exposed. This had to be Damian Knight. He studied her for several silent seconds. “So…” His voice was calm and confident. “You’re Clara Hayes.” She straightened her shoulders. “And you’re Damian Knight.” “I am.” He gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. “Sit.” She remained standing. “I’d rather know why I’m here.” A faint smile touched his lips. “You have courage.” “I’ve been told it’s one of my flaws.” His expression returned to its usual calmness. “Your father’s company collapsed eight months ago.” Clara’s eyes widened. “He borrowed money from three private lenders.” “You’ve been working overtime to help your family.” “Your savings account currently isn’t enough to cover even one percent of the debt.” Every word struck like lightning. “How do you know all that?” “I make it my business to know.” She felt uncomfortable. It was as though this stranger had read every page of her life. “What do you want from me?” Damian walked toward his desk and placed a thin folder in front of her. “Open it.” With trembling hands, Clara flipped through the pages. Her eyes widened. It was a marriage contract. She looked up immediately. “This has to be some kind of joke.” “I don’t joke.” “You expect me to marry you?” “For one year.” Clara laughed in disbelief. “No.” “You haven’t heard the offer.” “I don’t need to.” She pushed the folder back toward him. “I’m leaving.” “You’ll regret that.” She stopped walking. Damian’s voice remained calm. “I’ll clear every naira your father owes.” She slowly turned around. “I’ll protect your family from every creditor.” Her heart pounded. “In return…” He looked directly into her eyes. “You’ll become my wife.” Silence filled the room. Clara couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Why me?” “Because you’re exactly the person I need.” “That doesn’t answer my question.” “It doesn’t have to.” She shook her head. “No amount of money is worth marrying a complete stranger.” Damian folded his hands. “I expected that answer.” She walked toward the door. Just before reaching it, his voice stopped her again. “You have forty-eight hours.” She looked back. “If you refuse…” His expression didn’t change. “…I won’t interfere when your father’s creditors take everything.” Clara clenched her fists. “You’re trying to buy my life.” “I’m offering you a choice.” She left without another word. Outside the building, she took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm inside her. This couldn’t be real. A billionaire had just asked her to marry him. As the driver dropped her back home, she noticed several unfamiliar vehicles parked outside. Her heart sank. The same debt collectors from yesterday stood at the front gate. One of them was already changing the locks. Her mother was crying. Her father looked completely broken. The lead collector held up a document and announced loudly, “You’ve run out of time. This property is now under our control.” Clara froze. She suddenly remembered Damian’s final words. “You have forty-eight hours.” For the first time in her life… She wondered if marrying a ruthless billionaire was the only way to save the people she loved.
