Chapter 3-The Breach

356 Words
The moment Nina stepped out of the bookstore, the air felt heavier—like walking through water. People still moved along the streets, but slower, as if time had thinned around them. Efe caught up to her. “Listen. I need you to come with me. Somewhere safe.” “Safe from what?” she asked, eyeing him warily. “From Them. From yourself. From the collapse.” He led her through a series of side alleys until they reached a narrow metal gate hidden between two buildings. With a glance over his shoulder, he tapped a sequence on a small black panel embedded into the wall. The gate clicked open. Behind it lay a spiral staircase leading downward. “What is this place?” Nina asked. “We call it the Memory Vault.” They descended in silence until they reached a chamber lit by faint green lights and covered in screens. One of them displayed her — Nina — standing in the bookstore. Another showed her sleeping. Another one flickered with static, occasionally showing a woman who looked exactly like her, but dressed in leather and holding a weapon. “Is that—?” “Yes. It’s her. The other you,” Efe said. “We’ve been tracking echoes across timelines. Yours is the strongest. Which means you’re the anchor. If your mind collapses, everything does.” Nina’s heart thudded in her chest. “Why me?” “Because you’re the only version of yourself who hasn’t forgotten yet.” A sharp pain stabbed her forehead. Images rushed through her — fire, screaming, running through a tunnel, a man’s hand letting go of hers. “Something’s coming,” Efe whispered. “A breach. They know we’ve made contact.” As he spoke, the lights dimmed. The monitors began to flicker with red warnings. A high-pitched screech filled the vault. Then a message appeared across every screen: “ANCHOR DETECTED. MEMORY RESET IN: 00:02:59” Efe grabbed her shoulders. “You have to fight it, Nina. Whatever happens next—don’t forget who you are.” Nina’s birthmark pulsed. And then everything went white.
