Chapter Three

1385 Words
I take a quick shower, I don't like being away from him for long. I can't protect him if I can't see him. I throw my green contacts in the trash, and my eyes feel free. I hate wearing the colored contacts, but I don't know any other way to protect myself. My husband probably has people searching for me everywhere. If they recognize me that's it. I'm done, he will come for me in a matter of seconds. So, every new town means new eye color, new hair color, new clothes, and a new name. Same goes for Brad. I don't know how else to keep him safe. I'm ninety nine percent sure my husband is searching for him too. I mean why wouldn't he be. I know I should get out of the country, but that requires flights and passports. I don't know anyone that can make me a fake passport or any other kind of fake identification. I didn't even have a fake ID when I was in high school. I was a good girl. I was a good girl all the way up until six months ago. I've never even had a speeding ticket before. I was forced to do what I did. I didn't have a choice. I couldn't just let Brad die. I had to save him and I would do it again. I brush my hair, and throw on a long T-shirt. When I step out of the bathroom I hear Brad whimpering in his sleep. Something he has done every night since I saved him. His nightmares are awful. I would do anything to make them stop. I walk around the small motel room turning off all the lights. Brad is terrified of the dark, every light is always on no matter where we are staying. After turning off all the lights I grab the TV remote and climb into bed with Brad. I turn the TV off once I am snuggled up next to Brad. The silence and darkness make his nightmares worse, but I need to be able to hear if anything out of the ordinary happens while we are sleeping. Brad whimpers loudly and he starts shaking in his sleep. I spoon him wrapping my arms tightly around his stomach. Laying my head against his head I shush him soothingly. A few minutes later he settles down, but I don't let go of him. I keep holding him, I may not be able to sleep but he needs to rest. His body needs to heal. I spend the rest of the night holding him and thinking of all the things I need to do when daylight comes. Brad only sleeps for a couple of hours, which is more than he normally gets. Around seven thirty in the morning Brad wakes up. "Good morning." He says, his voice groggy from sleep. "Good morning." I say kissing his cheek. "How did you sleep?" I ask, even though I already know the answer. "Okay, I guess. Did you get any sleep?" He asks. For a second I debate lying to him, but honesty is the only thing we have. "No. I didn't, but it's okay. I'm glad you got a little rest." Brad frowns. "You can't keep going with no sleep." "I promise I am okay. I just had a lot of stuff on my mind. I will try to get some rest tonight." I say trying to sound sincere. I do mean it. I will try to get some sleep tonight. Usually the only sleep I get is when I literally pass out from exhaustion. I let go of him, rolling out of bed. Brad stretches a little and rolls off the bed. "Are you hungry?" I ask. Brad shrugs. "Yes a little, but I will be okay." I frown. "I will go get us some food." I pull on a pair of pants and change my shirt. "Lock the door when I leave and keep the phone close by. I will be back as soon as I can okay. If anything happens call me okay." Brad pulls me into a tight hug. "I love you, come back safely." "I will. I love you too." I kiss his cheek and head out the door. I think I saw a little ran down bakery when we were driving around looking for a motel. I also need to find an apartment or a house or something more permanent than a motel. We will need a car as well. I am really getting tired of starting over. I walk around for a little bit trying to remember where I saw the bakery. I pass several apartment buildings, but I don't know if I want to stay in this neighborhood. It's kind of sketchy around here. I finally find the bakery. There is plywood covering all the windows and there is graffiti all over the building. The pastries smell amazing though. As if right on cue my stomach growls. 'Eat My Hole' is the name on the sign. I don't know if I should laugh or applaud them for the unique name. "Welcome to Eat My Hole." A young red headed girl says. "What can I get you?" I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing. "Umm give me a dozen donuts please, assorted." I say, looking around the place. The young girl boxes up the donuts, handing me the pretty pink box with the words Eat My Hole in bold print on the top. "Can I also get one of those newspapers please?" I ask pointing at the stack of newspapers on the counter behind her. "Yes of course." She says smiling at me. "If that's everything it will be six dollars please." My eyes widen in shock. Six dollars? That's it? Wow. I hand the young girl a hundred dollar bill and she frowns. "I don't think I have enough money in the register to break this. Do you have anything smaller?" She asks giving me an apologetic smile. I give her my friendliest smile. "That's okay sweetie. Keep it. Thank you!" I say and walk out carrying the box and my newspaper. I walk back to the motel keeping my eye on my surroundings the whole time. "Brad it's me babe, open up." Brad unlocks the door and I walk in setting the box of donuts on the small desk. "Dig in." I say flopping down on the bed with the newspaper. Brad looks at the box and burst out laughing. "Eat My Hole? You actually went into a bakery called Eat My Hole?" I can't help but laugh with him, his laughter is contagious. "It was the closest thing around here." I say through the laughter. Brad shakes his head, laughing as he picks out a couple of donuts. Sitting down in the desk chair he takes a bite of a plain donut. "Oh. My. God. This is incredible, you have got to eat one." He says eyes wide, speaking with his mouth full. "I will in a minute." I say smiling as I watch him devour three donuts in just a couple of minutes. Brad eats two more, licking his fingers in an exaggerated manner. "You better hurry up or I will eat every last one of them!" I laugh rolling my eyes. "Fine give me one of those ones with sprinkles." I say reaching my hand out. Brad reaches in grabbing a donut with the hand he just licked all up on. "Ewww you just licked those fingers and now you're getting my donut with them!" I say making a face. Brad licks the side of the donut. "And now I've licked your donut. What are you going to do about it?" He says putting his hand on his hip. I burst out laughing. "You are lucky I love you or I would whoop your ass. Now give me the damn donut!" Brad laughs too. "Here." He says grabbing another donut with sprinkles out of the box with his clean hand. "Thank you!" I say still laughing. "Your welcome." He says taking a big bite out of the donut he licked. Wow. He was right. This donut is incredible! I will definitely have to go back to Eat My Hole real soon!
