Elara’s POV
The gate creaked as I pushed it open.
The familiar sound should have brought relief, home, safety but instead, dread coiled tightly in my stomach. The house stood dark and silent, yet something felt wrong. The air itself felt heavy, as though it carried anger that had been waiting for me.
I barely stepped inside when the living room light snapped on.
“There she is.”
My aunt’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.
She stood in the middle of the room, arms crossed, her face twisted with rage. Beside her was Serena perfectly dressed, lips curled in a smug smile, her eyes glittering with something cruel and eager.
My heart sank.
“Where have you been?” my aunt demanded.
“I..” My voice trembled. “I was....”
“Don’t lie!” Serena snapped, stepping forward. “We know where you were.”
My aunt’s eyes burned into me. “Coming home late like a shameless girl. Sleeping with men and thinking you can hide it?”
The words struck me so hard I felt dizzy.
“No!” I cried. “That’s not true”
SLAP.
The sound echoed through the room.
Pain exploded across my cheek, my head snapping to the side. For a moment, I couldn’t even breathe. My hand flew to my face as tears flooded my eyes.
“How dare you deny it!” my aunt screamed. “You think we don’t see you? Leaving the house, coming back like a prostitute!”
“I saved someone!” I sobbed. “She had an accident—”
“Liar!” Serena shouted. “You were with a man! I saw the car drop you!”
My aunt grabbed my arm violently, yanking me forward. “You useless girl! Your mother should have sold you off instead of keeping you to disgrace this family!”
Her words pierced deeper than the slap.
I fell to my knees as she shoved me down, the world blurring through tears.
“You eat our food, sleep under our roof, and now you shame us?” she continued, raining blows down on me. “You think you’re better than us?”
Serena laughed softly, circling me like a predator. “I always told you she was dirty.”
I raised my arms to protect my face, my body curling inward as the pain rained down slaps, kicks, cruel words that hurt worse than any blow.
“Please,” I whispered. “Please stop…”
But mercy had never lived in this house.
Alexander’s POV
I don’t know why I turned back.
I told myself it was unfinished business. A sense of responsibility. My grandmother’s voice in my head.
But the truth was simpler and more dangerous.
I couldn’t stop thinking about her.
The way she sat in my car, tense and quiet. The way she flinched at Serena’s voice. The way she thanked me as if kindness was something she had to earn.
As I drove away from her street, unease gnawed at me, sharp and persistent.
Be careful, I had told her.
The words felt strange now.
I slowed the car.
Then I stopped.
Something was wrong.
I turned around.
As I approached her house, I saw it,a commotion through the window. Raised voices. Movement. Violence.
My chest tightened.
I parked abruptly and stepped out of the car.
The door was unlocked.
I pushed it open
And saw hell.
Elara was on the floor.
Her aunt stood over her, screaming, her hand raised to strike again. Serena stood nearby, watching with satisfaction.
Rage exploded inside me.
“Enough.”
My voice cut through the room like thunder.
Every head snapped toward me.
The room froze.
The woman’s face drained of color the moment she saw me.
“A-Alexander Kingsley?” she stammered.
I stepped forward, my gaze cold and lethal. “Step away from her.”
Immediately, her posture changed. Panic twisted into false politeness.
“Oh! Sir! I didn’t know you please forgive this mess,” she said nervously, smoothing her clothes. “This girl she’s a disgrace. A shameless thing.”
She pointed at Elara. “She sleeps with men for money!”
My fists clenched.
Serena stepped forward eagerly. “Alex, I’m Serena, her cousin.” She smiled sweetly and reached for my arm. “I didn’t want you to see this side of her, but”
I dodged her touch.
“Do not touch me,” I said sharply.
Her smile shattered.
The room went silent.
I knelt beside Elara, carefully lifting her face. Her cheek was red and swollen, her lips trembling, her eyes dull with pain and shock.
“She didn’t do anything wrong,” I said quietlynbut my voice carried absolute authority.
Her aunt laughed nervously. “Sir, you don’t understand. She’s a liar”
“I understand enough,” I interrupted.
I stood, turning to face them fully.
“You laid hands on someone under my grandmother’s protection.”
Their faces drained of color.
Serena’s voice shook. “She’s nobody!”
I looked at her, “Not anymore,” I replied.
I bent down and lifted Elara into my arms.
She weighed almost nothing.
Her body was tense, her breath shallow as she clutched my jacket weakly.
“It’s okay,” I murmured softly, only for her. “I’ve got you.”
Her aunt rushed forward. “Sir, please she belongs here!”
I turned toward the door.
“She doesn’t belong to you,” I said coldly. “She never did.”
And with that, I walked out.
The door closed behind us.
immediately we reached outside, she collapsed.i wonder what she must have been through, pain sorrow every day of her life."this has to come to an end"I said firmly assuring myself and took her inside the car and headed straight to the hospital.
I don't know why I care for her, maybe it was just a pay back for saving my grandmother,I thought to myself
