Chapter 10 – A Shocking news

1024 Words
Brian I was engrossed in his work, hunched over his desk as he navigated through a pile of reports and spreadsheets. Just as I was getting into the groove, my phone let out an unfamiliar ringtone. I frowned, eyeing the screen skeptically. I contemplated letting it ring, but the insistent buzzing kept going. With a resigned sigh, I decided to pick up the call. "Hello?" I said, my annoyance evident. "Good afternoon, sir. I'm calling from the Royal Heights Hotel," the voice on the other end introduced themselves. My brow furrowed. Royal Heights Hotel? I mentally searched for any connections to the place. "Alright, go ahead." "We received a message from a woman named Stacy," the receptionist continued. "She was asking for someone named Kevin." My heart skipped a beat. Stacy? I knew who she was I had run a background check on her before for Kevin. But why would she be looking for him? My boss, Kevin, wasn't exactly the type to hand out his number. I usually managed his communications and appointments, and this was an unexpected twist. "Stacy? I know her. What does she want with Kevin?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. The receptionist explained, "She mentioned she's been trying to get in touch with Kevin. Left her number and requested that we pass it along." I was intrigued. Stacy's sudden interest in reaching Kevin seemed like a piece of a puzzle I hadn't seen before and I was the puzzle master. "Did she provide any contact details?" I inquired, my mind racing to figure out the next move. "Yes, indeed. She wanted us to share them with Kevin and asked him to call her back," the receptionist confirmed. I made up my mind. "Alright, thank you. I'll take it from here. I'll get back to her soon." "Of course, sir. Just let her know we've received her message," the receptionist said before ending the call. My eyes shifted to the glass door of Kevin's office, my boss engrossed in his usual whirlwind of tasks. With a determined exhale, I rose from my desk and made my way to his door. A polite knock disrupted his focus, and he glanced up, his attention shifting to me. "Come in," Kevin's voice held a touch of impatience, his mind clearly absorbed in his work. I stepped into his office, the door shutting behind me. "Sir Kevin, I've got something you should know." His gaze fixed on me, expectant. "What is it, Brian?" I took a moment to gather my thoughts before speaking. "I got a call from the Royal Heights Hotel. They mentioned that a woman named Stacy was looking for you." Kevin's eyebrows shot up in surprise, his intrigue palpable. "Stacy? Did she say why she's looking for me?" "She didn't give a specific reason, but it seemed urgent." A flicker of anticipation crossed Kevin's eyes. "Alright, thanks for letting me know, Brian. I'll take it from here." *** Kevin I picked up my phone immediately after Brian's update, a mix of curiosity and excitement welling up within me. Dialing the number Stacy had left, I leaned back in my chair, waiting for her to answer. A few rings later, a voice came through the line. "Hello?" Her voice was soft yet carried an undertone of urgency. "Hi, this is Kevin," I replied, my tone composed yet laced with curiosity. "I got a message that you were looking for me." There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by a sigh of relief. "Kevin, I'm so glad you called. I'm sorry for reaching out through the hotel." I leaned forward, my intrigue intensifying. "No problem, but why didn't you just call my private number?" Stacy's voice carried a hint of sheepishness. "I... I lost your number. I know it sounds irresponsible, but a lot has happened since we last saw each other." My brow furrowed at her explanation. How could she have lost my number? "It's fine." Stacy hesitated for a moment before responding, her voice softer. "Kevin, I need to tell you something important." I leaned in even closer, my curiosity growing stronger. "Alright, I'm listening. What is it?" Stacy's words flowed quickly, as if she had been rehearsing them in her mind. "Kevin, I'm pregnant. And, well, you might be the father." My heart skipped a beat, the gravity of her words sinking in. I tried to process what she was saying. "Pregnant? Are you sure?" "Yes, I've confirmed it," Stacy replied, her voice a mix of nervousness and determination. "I didn't know how else to find you, and I thought you deserved to know." My mind raced as I considered the implications of her revelation. A child, potentially mine? It was a lot to take in. "Stacy, this is... unexpected." "I know, Kevin," Stacy's voice wavered slightly. "I'm not asking for anything from you, but I felt it was only fair to tell you." I took a deep breath, trying to steady my thoughts. "Let's meet in person. We need to talk about this face to face." Stacy agreed, and we arranged to meet later that day. As I ended the call, I couldn't ignore the mix of emotions swirling within me surprise, responsibility, and a determination to navigate this unexpected turn of events. *** Stacy After ending the call with Kevin, I let out a deep breath, my heart still racing from the weight of the conversation. The truth was out there now, and the unexpected turn of events had left me both relieved and apprehensive. As I tried to process everything, Sarah's concerned voice broke through my thoughts. "Stacy, what did Kevin say?" Sarah's eyes were fixed on me, a mixture of curiosity and worry evident in her expression. I turned to her, offering a faint smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. "He was surprised, as you can imagine. He wants to meet in person to talk about it." Sarah's eyebrows shot up. "Meet in person? Stacy, are you okay?" I nodded, though the uncertainty still gnawed at me. "I think so. It's just... a lot to process, you know?"
