While on Bataan, Kari worked as a scrub nurse, and always in tandem with Doctor Cambridge. During her tour, the Japanese air force bombed the medical facilities on Bataan twice. The Japanese perfidy wounded and killed many Americans, who’d already been wounded in the defense of the peninsula.
Several weeks before the American lines collapsed on Bataan, the Far East Command sent Ens. Hansen and Lt. Cambridge to the coastal town of Mariveles, where they waited for transportation to Corregidor. Kari never learned why they singled her out from all the other Navy nurses.
