As the light began to fade in the overcast sky, the din of the battle slowed—muting the shock of the last several hours. A tenuous calm settled over the field, interrupted by the distant cries of wounded soldiers, the sporadic explosions of incoming artillery shells, and the staccato report of small arms fire.
